The Saint-Josephois Roger Frappier lived the evening of the Oscars, last Sunday, March 27, in halftone. As much as he was happy for his team as well as his friend Jane Campion, who won the Best Director Oscar for the film The Power of the Dog which he co-produced, he said he was dismayed and disappointed by the gesture of Will Smith, who hit presenter Chris Rock during the ceremony.

“This is a result beyond our expectations. We are really happy with this trophy which confirms that we have done a good job. I’m especially happy for the 12 nominations, ranging from director of photography to editing and soundtrack. The Academy has underlined the incredible quality of the film,” rejoiced Mr. Frappier, in an interview last week, when he was about to take the plane to return to Quebec.

An unacceptable gesture

Despite this triumph for his film, the 94and The Oscars ceremony will forever be colored by this disgraceful gesture from actor Will Smith, who took to the stage following a questionable joke by the presenter in the category of best documentary, Chris Rock. This gesture made the rounds of the planet and quickly threw shade at the recipients and finalists of the Oscars.

“It was such a violent gesture in front of 16 million people. In the room, we thought of a staging, but when he began to vociferate in his seat, we realized the slippage. People were flabbergasted,” says Roger Frappier.

The 76-year-old man doesn’t understand why the crowd started to applaud when 45 minutes later, Will Smith took the stage to receive his Oscar for best actor for his role in the film. King Richard about the father of the Williams sisters.

“This gesture came to tarnish all the work he did with this film. Chris Rock presented Best Documentary: Who Remembers the Winner? asks Mr. Frappier.

The Saint-Josephois producer also sees a parallel between this gesture and his film. ” In The Power of the Dog, we talk about contemporary themes such as homophobia, but also male toxicity. And the irony is that Will Smith’s gesture reflects a case of male toxicity as we denounce in the film, ”he analyzes.

A good reception of the film

Despite this incident, Mr. Frappier wants people to remember the ceremony positively. “The Oscars, for me, is the culmination of the last few months. It all started at the Venice Film Festival in September, where Jane Campion won the Silver Lion for Directing. Then, we won several Golden Globes, including Best Picture. Then it was awards at the British Academy Film Awards and the Critics Choice Awards. It all culminated at the Oscars with 12 nominations and a trophy. It’s incredible what is happening to us, ”he lists.

Roger Frappier grew out of this experience. It is partly thanks to him that this film was born since in 2011, he acquired the rights to the book The Power of the Dog by Thomas Savage. It was finally in 2017 that Jane Campion contacted him to make a film of it. “It was a long road, but to see the reception of the film in Europe and the United States, it was all worth it! he exclaims.

The film is still available on Netflix.

A Quebec film on the way

Roger Frappier’s next project is a Quebec feature film whose shooting will begin in September.

The film, which will be called Tell me why these things are so beautiful, will tell the story of Brother Marie-Victorin. “We are currently at the financing stage, but everything is going well. The choice of actors will be made soon”, concludes the president of the Max Films company.
