2023 seems like another stellar year to go to the movies. When it comes to animation and comics in the new year, no film is more anticipated than Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse. The beloved actor’s sequel to the 2018 Oscars will finally hit theaters in June, and in a new image we see Shameik MooreMiles Morales faces a surprising threat.
In a larger post celebrating Sony Pictures Animation’s 20th anniversary by The Wrap, Sony has teased a new image for the web sequel that spotlights Miles Morales vs. Oscar Isaacby Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099. Spider-Man 2099 pins Miles against a wall that appears to be in their central Spider-Verse hub or layer. It’s something we got a glimpse of in the latest trailer released earlier this month, but here we get an up-close and personal view of Spider-Verse’s inner turmoil. Something unknown, likely related to the film’s new main villain, The Spot, pits all of the Spider-Verse against Miles. While this sequel will feature villains like The Spot and The Vulture, it looks like Spider-Man 2099 will be a central antagonist in the film and hold dark secrets that have the main Spider-Duo questioning their roles as heroes.
We have to wait and see what those secrets are, but from all the marketing so far, Through the Spider-Verse seems like an even bigger and better movie than its masterful original. The stakes seem so high for this upcoming adventure and recently spider wormsthe senior host teased the Avengers: Endgame-like the scale of this movie and its trilogy capper, Beyond the Spider-Verse. In The Wrap’s own article, spider wormsthe producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller said, “The things we do in this new Spider-Verse movie are breaking the pipelines again. But everyone is excited about it and not just terrified. They would say the sequel is “definitely crazier.”
When Into the Spider-Verse Released in 2018, no one expected it to be one of the best animated movies ever made, but that’s exactly what it was. It was this jaw-dropping, character-driven, emotional coming-of-age story and a fresh take on the classic Spider-Man origin story. A story that moviegoers know by heart at this stage. However, his animation style was first and foremost a work of art. This sequel seems to continue that on a much grander scale, with that image alone being jaw-dropping to say the least.
