Babylon, The 3 Musketeers, Indiana Jones… 5 films to see in Caen by summer 2023

The cinemas of Caen (Calvados) got back on their feet at the end of 2022, driven in particular by the incredible success of Avatar the Way of the Water. the first semester 2023 is also looking very good, with several blockbusters which should attract a large audience: babylon, Asterix and Obelix, The 3 Musketeers, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Indiana Jones 5.

Damien Chazelle returns with Babylon

At only 37 years old, Damien Chazelle has established himself as an essential director, one of those for whom the awards ceremony Oscars is a must for every movie. Revealed by the excellent whiplash (2014), he transformed the essay with La La Land (2016), before experiencing a first failure (commercial more than critical) with first-man (2018).

Here he is back with babylon, a fresco that immerses us in the Los Angeles of the 1920s. This feature film of more than three hours (3h09 precisely) traces the rise and fall of different characters during the creation of Hollywood, “an era of decadence and limitless depravity. Promising, all the more so since we find in the casting two of the most glamorous stars of the moment: Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie.

Asterix and Obelix are back on the big screen! baptized The middle Empire, this fifth part takes us to China. The 3 Musketeers… made in France!

Alexandre Dumas’ novel has not always been celebrated on the big screen, especially when Americans are allowed to seize this cult work of French heritage. The latest adaptation, proposed by Paul WS Anderson in 2011, gave birth to a world-class nanar, despite a distribution led by Christoph Waltz, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom and Mads Mikkelsen.

As one is never better served than by oneself, the studios Pathe have gone all out to correct this oddity. This large-scale project was entrusted to Martin Bourboulon, who recently got his hands on eiffel (2021), another historic blockbuster. He gave birth to two films: D’Artagnanunveiled on April 5, and Milady, in theaters in December. Guardians of the Galaxy Episode 3

We had to have a “marvelerie” in our selection. We could have chosen Ant-man and the Wasp – Quantumania, but the adventures of the ant-man have left us wanting so far. Conversely, the two films already devoted to Guardians of the Galaxy stand out for their originality, which is no small feat in the increasingly formatted world of superheroes. A singularity that we owe mainly to James Gunn, one of the rare directors who still manages to impose his choices on the ogre disney. But not for long, since he has already committed to the studio Warner to reformat the universe DC (Batman, Superman, wonder woman), struggling to exist in the face of the steamroller Marvel.

James Mangold revives Indiana Jones

The Raiders of the Lost Ark (nineteen eighty one), The cursed temple (1984) and The Last Crusade (1989): in three films as entertaining as they are spectacular, Steven Spielberg marked the 80s and imposed a legendary hero: IndianaJones. The famous archaeologist then became rarer, only returning in 2008, to The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, a failed fourth feature that had buried the franchise. At least that’s what we thought, but you should never underestimate Hollywood’s great recycling machine…

Because “Indy” is indeed back! For the occasion, Spielberg hands over to James Mangold. A reason for hope as much as a pledge of quality, both the director of Logan (2017) and Le Mans 66 (2019) is a safe bet in American cinema.

Entitled The Dial of Destiny, this fifth part is still based on the stainless Harrison Ford (80 years old all the same). The action is set in the late 1960s, as the United States and the Soviet Union shift into overdrive in the space race. A new challenge for the adventurer and his goddaughter Helena (the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge), who will face the ex-Nazi Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen, always to his advantage as a “bad guy on duty”).
