Chris Rock getting ready to do Netflix history with his next live stand-up show, Chris Rock: Selective Outrage. The special will cement the legendary comedian as the first-ever performer to be broadcast live across the world on the streaming platform.
Rock, who is an icon in the comedy world and beyond, is set to take the stage in Baltimore, Maryland for the global streaming event. A teaser for the upcoming special highlights the Everybody Hates Chris narrator in his dressing room as he leans forward, looking directly at the camera, with an “I mean business” expression. The moment is interrupted by a knock on the door that hears Chris say, “they’re ready for you,” before he begins to walk towards an auditorium and easily stands in front of his microphone. On the back of the release, Netflix also unveiled a poster for the special, which sees Rock seemingly crouched down as he stares into the audience with the word “LIVE” lit up behind him.
From the teaser and poster, it’s clear there’s a desire to make virtual audiences feel as close to the star behind their screens as possible. Rock also shared the exciting news on Instagram, telling his 6.1 million followers to “get ready” for the special. Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out what hardware he’s about to cover as part of the showcase, including whether or not he’ll tackle yet. Will Smith slapped him at the Oscars, for which Smith has since apologized. The show may be the first global event streamed live on the platform, but it’s not Rock’s foray into the platform. In 2018, the comedian took center stage on his stand-up show Chris Rock: Tambourine.
Selective outrage is positioned to mark a gigantic moment for the streaming giant. In a previously released public statement, Robbie Law, vice president of stand-up and comedy formats at Netflix, hailed rock as “one of the most iconic and important comedic voices of our generation.” “It will be a moment to remember and we are so honored to have Chris carry this torch,” he added. It comes after the platform held its biggest ever in-person event, a live comedy show, Netflix is a joke: the festival. Rock was among 330 comedians who performed in a list of 295 shows in Los Angeles. Given that the showcase sold over 260,000 tickets, it’s no surprise that Netflix wants to up its comedy game again with another ready-made move.
