Golden Globes 2023: Eddie Murphy dares to joke about the slap of Will Smith – Gala

Hollywood was in turmoil on the night of Tuesday 10 to Wednesday 11 January: the biggest movie stars indeed went to the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles for the 80th Golden Globes ceremony, which opens the awards season in the United States. Among the celebrities rewarded, we will especially remember Eddie Murphy. The iconic voice of the donkey in cartoons Shrek has received The Cecil B. DeMille Award for his entire careerextending from his starring role in A prince in New York at his game in the Beverly Hills Cop. During his appearance on stage to thank the committee for this distinction, the 61-year-old actor dared to joke on Will Smith’s slap at Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.

The one who had already won a Golden Globe in 2007 for his role in Dreamgirls first had a few words for his loved ones and for those who collaborated with him during the shooting of his films. “I’ve been waiting for this for a long time”, he then rejoiced, contemplating his 45-year career. Eddie Murphy concluded by humorously listing the secrets of his longevity in the seventh art. “It’s very simple, there are three things to do to achieve success, prosperity, longevity : pay your taxes, mind your onions, and don’t talk about Will Smith’s wife!” he launched in front of the hearing, hilarious.

The most famous slap in the history of cinema

As a reminder, Will Smith won the Oscar for best actor for his role in The Williams Method in March 2022. A few minutes before presenting him with this award, Chris Rock, who presented the evening, had joked about the shaved head of Jada Pinkett Smith, the wife of his colleague. The latter being reached alopeciaa disease that accelerates hair loss, her husband was indignant and went on stage to slap the comediansummoning him to “keep (his) wife’s name out of his mouth”. The theatrical gesture had caused the media and social networks to ignite and, realizing his mistake, Will Smith publicly apologized. On April 8, 2022, the Board of Directors of the Academy of Oscars decided to ban the actor from participating in the Oscars for 10 years.

Passing through the Daily Show on November 28, 2022, Will Smith was returned to this controversy, evoking “a rage that has been bottled up for too long”.The actor had indicated that his gesture was full of “complexities”: I just lost my mind. I was going through something special that night. Not that that justifies my behavior at all… There were many things at once. I was the little boy who watched his father beat his mother, you know? It all overflowed at this moment”he had concluded with emotion.
