Kevin Feige Says There’s a ‘Gender Bias’ Against Oscar Superhero Movies

Marvel boss Kevin Feige doesn’t really hold his breath for Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings be recognized during awards season. The most lucrative national release of the year, Shang-Chi was a big hit for Marvel Studios, garnering critical acclaim in addition to big box office wins. It also spawned a new franchise with Destin Daniel Cretton developing a Disney + sequel and series.

Due to the cheer, Feige hopes that Shang-ChI will make a splash at the Oscars, but he’s the first to admit that being recognized at the event is an uphill battle for comic book adaptations. In a recent interview with THR, the director of Marvel Studios explained how the Black Panther The Oscars for composer Ludwig Göransson, costume designer Ruth E. Carter, and production designers Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart were a tremendous accomplishment that meant a lot to Marvel. Feige also suggests that a ‘gender bias’ might prevent Shang-Chi to do the same, but he still hopes that will happen.

“I think we’re still in deficit because of the Marvel logo and because of a gender bias that certainly exists. I just loved it for a brilliant time there with Black Panther that was put aside and the work was recognized for the accomplishment it was… There are a lot of comic book fans out there who didn’t know who Shang-Chi was. And yet the work that Destin did and Dave did and Sue did and Joel did, created something new that connected with audiences. We recognized it, the public recognized it, and I would love the hard work of all those people telling their stories to be recognized.

With or without Oscars, Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings was used to make Simu Liu a star in Hollywood. Starring Liu, the film stars Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kinglsey, and Tony Leung. Destiny Daniel Cretton directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham.

The film has an especially high rating for a superhero flick on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring 91% freshness. Because Eternals would set the new record for lowest-rated Marvel Studios film shortly thereafter, the direction looks much better. Earlier this month, the film was also a successful People’s Choice Awards where it received five nominations in total. Shang-Chi won the 2021 Action Movie Award with an additional nomination for the 2021 Film. Simu Liu won the Action Movie Star Award and was also shortlisted for Male Movie Star of 2021 with Awkwafina nominated for the Female Movie Star of 2021.

Currently, Destin Daniel Cretton is still brainstorming ideas for the script for Shang Chi 2 and has yet to officially start writing the screenplay. The sequel does not yet have a release date. For now you can watch the original Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings streaming on Disney +. This news comes to us from the Hollywood Reporter.
