Ariana DeBose best supporting actress for ‘West Side Story’

The 31-year-old actress is the worthy successor to the legendary Rita Moreno, a native like her of Puerto Rico, who had already received an Oscar in 1962 for the role of Anita in the original version of the film.

“I’m so grateful to you, your Anita paved the way for thousands of Anitas like me,” she told the 90-year-old star who was applauding her in the room.

The gala evening begins in Hollywood

Best Actress: Jessica Chastain doesn’t “think she’s winning”

Nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of a televangelist in Tammy Faye’s eyes, American actress Jessica Chastain does not think she will receive a statuette tonight.

“I don’t think I’m going to win,” she told AFP on the red carpet, adding that the other competing actresses “are goddesses and their performances are so beautiful.”

“It’s always a nice compliment to receive nominations like this from your peers,” says Canadian director Denis Villeneuve on the Oscars red carpet.

His sci-fi epic Dunes is nominated in 10 categories.

A note on the appointments

The Power of the Dog is in the running in 12 categories, including those of the best film, best director, best actor, best female supporting roles (Kirsten Dunst) and male, where he manages to align two candidates out of five in total (Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee) .

Dunes by Denis Villeneuve, follows him closely, just like Belfast and his seven nominations.

Steven Spielberg (West Side Story) is up for Best Direction, Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter) and Jessica Chastain (In the Eyes of Tammy Faye) for Best Actress.

A trio of actresses at the presentation

Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer (stand-upper and actress) and Regina Hall (seen in the cult satirical saga Scary Movie) will share the presentation of the evening, with a slot of one hour each under the spotlights.
