The “Petit Aiguille” and “Men” prizes are the best proof of this. The former saw small watchmaker Trilobe beat brands like Breitling, Grand Seiko and Zenith. The message from the creatives at Trilobe was clear: a simple sketch on the back of a napkin leads to wonderful creations. This is how Atelier Akrivia beat out Bulgari, Zenith and Parmigiani Fleurier. Its founder, Rexhep Rexhepi, said: “I am a dreamer and this prize allows me to keep dreaming”.
Although his Arceau The Time Traveler were not conceived in terms of gender, Hermés was nevertheless pleasantly surprised to be the recipient of Complications Hommes et Femmes. When it comes to daring, Bulgari was a no-brainer. When launched earlier this year, theOcto Finissimo Ultra 10th Anniversary established itself as the thinnest watch ever made – and it featured a QR code on its dial. But the biggest prize of the night – the equivalent of Best Picture at the Hollywood Oscars – went to MB&F for its Legacy Machine Sequential Evo.
Time jokes, clichés and watchmaking references were of course present throughout the evening, and despite Edouard Baer’s best efforts, the ceremony ran out of time. In an auditorium full of watchmakers who pride themselves on counting the hours with exact precision and have spent their lives upholding the importance of punctuality, this was further proof that the watch industry can let loose and have fun. . And when she does, everyone wins.
