Oscars 2021, the winners: Chadwick Boseman shunned and women make history

Big winners, highlights of the ceremony… We tell you everything you need to remember from this 93rd Oscars ceremony.

This Sunday, April 25, was held the 93rd Academy Awards in an art deco station in Los Angeles. It rewarded the best films of 2020, including nomadland, The Father or Drunk, while adapting to the context of the health crisis while respecting barrier gestures. The ceremony had also been postponed by two months so that it takes place in the best possible conditions. In this particular context, the event entered the history of cinema, in particular thanks to the film nomadland by Chloe Zhao. In effect, the Chinese filmmaker shone at the 2021 Oscars, becoming the first non-white woman to win the Best Director Oscarafter Kathryn Bigelow, the first woman crowned for this award for Minesweepers in 2010.

nomadland was one of the favorite films of this ceremony, vying for the prize for best director with minari by Lee Isaac Chung Promising Young Woman by Emerald Fennell, mank by David Fincher, and Drunk by Thomas Vinterberg. Chloé Zhao had already won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival 2020 as well as the Golden Globe for best director in 2021. nomadland also obtained the award for best film and best actress for Frances McDormand in the role of Fern, already Oscar winner in 1997 for Fargo and in 2018 for Three Billboards: The Billboards of Revenge. After this ceremony, there is no doubt that Chloé Zhao’s career will be closely followed. Among the women rewarded, we can also highlight the victory of Emerald Fennell, director and screenwriter of Promising Young Womanwhich received the prize for best original screenplay, 13 years after that of Diablo Cody for Juno.


In the best actor category, Chadwick Boseman was posthumously nominated by the Academy for his last film role in The Blues of Ma Rainey. The interpreter of Black Panther was the favorite for this award, having received the award for best actor at the Golden Globes 2021. The Oscar for best actor was finally won by Anthony Hopkins for The Father by Frenchman Florian Zeller, thirty years after his Oscar for The Silence of the Lambs, sparking the annoyance of Chadwick Boseman fans on Twitter. However, the Academy paid tribute to personalities who have passed away as every year during its In Memoriam sequence, including Chadwick Boseman, Sean Connery or more recently Helen McCrory.

This special ceremony marked by many strong moments also crowned Sound of Metal by Mikkel EG Nielsen for Best Editing and Best Sound. tenet by Christopher Nolan received Best Visual Effects, while Drunk obtained those of best film music and best animated film, eleventh trophy for the Pixar studios in this category.
