Oscars 2022: “The Power of the Dog” by Jane Campion, “Dune” and “West Side Story” lead the nominations

The Jane Campion-directed film released on Netflix leads the race in the nominations for the 94th Academy Awards, which will take place on March 27. No French film is in the running.

The pre-ceremony ceremony was on Tuesday. Actors Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross hosted, for half an hour, the announcement of the nominations for the Oscars ceremony which will take place on March 27, one month after the French Césars, with a date slightly delayed in because of the Winter Olympics.

Second nomination for Jane Campion, a historic first

The film that collects the most nominations is a film that was only released in France on Netflix: “The Power of the Dog”, directed by Jane Campion. This story adapted from Thomas Savage’s novel, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, is nominated in 12 categories, including Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Actor for Cumberbatch, and Best Supporting Actor (Jesse Plemons) and female (Kirsten Dunst).

The film has already earned Jane Campion the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival, and three Golden Globes. Twenty-eight years after “The Piano Lesson”, she is the first director to obtain a second nomination in this category.

Long-awaited, “Dune” by Denis Villeneuve is nominated ten times, but twice in the major categories (“best film” and “best adaptation”), the rest of the nominations going to technical categories (best cinematography , best sound, best costumes, etc.).

After Cannes, “Drive my car” in good place

Then come, tied, the remake of “West Side Story” by Steven Spielberg and Kenneth Brannagh’s film “Belfast”, a black and white fresco inspired by the filmmaker’s childhood in Northern Ireland, which is not yet released in France: the two films are respectively named seven times.

No French film has been nominated in the category of best foreign film. The French will have to be content with having inspired the script for the film “Coda”, an American adaptation of “La Famille Bélier”, nominated three times, including one for the category of best film.

Conversely, the Japanese film “Drive my car”, already awarded at Cannes, is also nominated for the best film and best director categories. Finally, the last notable fact, in the category “best animated film”, three of the six places are occupied by Disney cartoons: “Encanto”, “Luca”, and “Raya and the last dragon”.
