While the next Oscars ceremony already has its favorites, The Power of the Dog in mind, an outsider film wins several prizes in other prestigious ceremonies and could well create a surprise in major categories at the Oscars.
On March 27, the 94th Academy Awards will be held, which will distinguish the best films of the past year. With the film industry still impacted by the effects of the pandemic, the rise of streaming movies has been felt. Last year, Netflix was the most awarded studio with seven awards.
The platform could well repeat this year since The Power Of The Dog, the last feature film by Jane Campion released on Netflix, is at the top of the nominations with 12 distinctions, including that of the best film.
But another platform could well create a surprise at the Oscars with an outsider film that won several awards at prestigious ceremonies a few days before the unmissable celebration: CODA, a feature film available on Apple TV+.
A moving remake that conquered hearts
American remake of The Bélier Family, which had achieved more than 7 million admissions at the French box office when it was released in 2015, CODA benefits from a generous promotional campaign for the Oscars, for which the film is nominated in the categories Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.
We saw CODA on Apple TV+: The American remake of The Bélier Family is successful!
If the producers and Apple TV+ are betting so much on this first feature film by Siân Heder (Orange Is the New Black, GLOW), it is because this US-style revisit of Éric Lartigau’s film has won over American audiences since that it was presented at the Sundance Festival, where it was notably awarded the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Prize.
More inclusive and authentic than the original film, CODA is a successful remake that called on real hearing-impaired actors, Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur and Daniel Durant, to embody the touching and funny Rossi.

The feature film follows the daily life of this deaf family in a Massachusetts fishing town through the story of their daughter Ruby (Emilia Jones), the only hearing in the family and CODA (acronym for “Child Of Deaf Adults”, which means “hearing child of deaf parents”) torn between her dreams of musical escape and her responsibilities towards her loved ones.
After making a splash at Sundance in the United States and being acquired by Apple TV+ for the sum of $25 million, CODA continues to win awards thanks to its emotionally powerful plot and its moving cast.
Since the beginning of the year, CODA has won no less than 18 awards, notably for the adapted screenplay by Siân Heder and the performance of Troy Kotsur with distinctions at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the BAFTAs and the Critics Choice Awards, among others. .

CODA, best film at the Oscars?
Just recently, the feature film won the Best Adapted Screenplay Award at the Writers Guild of America Awards and another award that may have sealed CODA’s fate at the Oscars. Indeed, the film acquired by Apple TV + was distinguished by the prize for best film at the Producers Guild Awards, a ceremony which, as recalled varietyis a precursor to the Oscars since the vast majority of award-winning feature films have subsequently won the Oscar for best film.
So will CODA have the same fate as Nomadland, Green Book and The Shape of Water, the last films that achieved this double? Response during the Oscars Ceremony on March 27, 2022, broadcast live and exclusively on CANAL+ in France.
