For better or for worse, the public can vote at the Oscars 2022, and between Marvel, Disney and horror film, the list unveiled by the Academy is very surprising.
In 2022, the Academy of Oscars has decided to innovate and give the public the opportunity to vote for their favorite film. Fans can therefore give their opinion on Twitter using the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite, but also on the Academy’s website. An announcement that made social media cinephiles speak strongly, amused by the initiative, but well aware that it seems destined to become a benchmark for trolls.
Indeed, each person can vote several times and on different media, which completely skews the result, especially with the armadas of trolls ready to do anything to elect their darlings Spider-Man: No Way Home, Dunes Where Cinderella. And precisely, to everyone’s surprise, Cinderella was ahead of the vote during the first counts (yes yes, in front of Spidey apparently), and when we began to doubt the power of Marvel, the 2022 Oscars revealed on Twitter the list of the ten films in the lead a few days before the end of the vote, set for March 3.
Presenting your #OscarsFanFavorite leader board. Continue casting your vote by:
1. Tweeting your favorite film from 2021 with the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite
2. OR by voting on https://t.co/dadD2i7Cy0Voting closes on Thursday, March 3rd. pic.twitter.com/dqAOqFEXSy

Without surprise, Cinderella is indeed still in the list and we find there Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Suicide Squad and Army of the Dead, the big blockbusters of the year 2022. Alongside them, we also note the presence of favorite films for the Oscars as The Power of the Dog (appointed 12 times officially), Dunes (nominated 10 times) and Tick, tick… Boom! whose main actor, Andrew Garfieldhas every chance of winning the Oscar for Best Actor.
More surprisingly, however, we find in the list the animated film All on stage 2 and the drama Minamataa film with Johnny Depp released directly on VOD in France, and which absolutely no one knows about (let’s be honest). But the most notable presence is that of the horror film Malignant, very widely regarded by a huge nanar by the public and criticsproving that the twittos are definitely having fun trying to troll the Oscars.
However, we may be surprised not to have in the list films like Dying can wait and Venom: Let There Be Carnage given their success. Same thing especially with Zack Snyder’s Justice League, strangely absent considering its huge community on social networks, the very origin (almost) of its existence.
Will the most viewed film of the year be the most appreciated?
In short, eclecticism is there in this selection, but it is difficult to know exactly the interest of this only symbolic public prize. We can suppose that it is a response to the accusations of elitism of which it is regularly the object that the Academy of Oscars has created this fake-award (the winner will just have the right to be cited as a film of the public during the ceremony, but will not receive any statuettes). A potential way to find a little connection with an audience that no longer seems to carry the ceremony in its heart.
In France, the Césars had also tried to regain closeness with the general public by creating the César du public in 2018. A reward that had been widely controversial, hesitating to reward the French film most seen by French spectators the first two years (with Crazy Raid in 2018 then The Tuches 3 in 2019), before transforming it into a vote of the members of the academy among the five French films most seen at the box office (Wretched finally elected winner in 2020 in the middle of We’ll end up together and others What else have we done to God?).
All that to say that the Academy, seeing how contested the award was, eventually scrapped it after just three years of existence. It remains to be seen now if the symbolic public prize of the Oscars will survive him longer.. The 94th Academy Awards will take place on the night of March 27-28, 2022.
