The Aries Family remake could be a surprise at the Oscars

Whereas The Power of the DogJane Campion’s latest film, was the big favorite in the Oscar race so far, the underdog CODA has just won a new award that could work in its favor on March 27 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

Has the race for the Oscars just been fully relaunched? Till today, The Power of the Dog acted as the overwhelming favorite to land the film industry’s ultimate award. Produced by Netflix, the latest film from New Zealand director Jane Campion is still in the running in no less than twelve categories at the Oscars, ahead of Dunes (Denis Villeneuve) and his ten nominations. Gold Jane Campion has been successively awarded at the Golden Globes, BAFTA, Critics Choice Awards and Directors Guild of America Awards, thus signaling the color that the prize list of the next Oscars could take. If everything suggests that the director of The Piano Lesson (1993) will indeed walk away with the prize for best director, the Oscar for best film could go in extremis to CODA, the american remake of The Aries Family (2014), Eric Lartigau’s film which had brought Louane Emera to light and had attracted more than seven million spectators to theaters.

Netflix and Apple neck and neck

It is very likely that one of the two streaming giants will win the ultimate award at the end of the March 27 ceremony, to the detriment of films like Belfast (Kenneth Branagh) West Side Story (Steven Spielberg)Licorice Pizza (Paul Thomas Anderson) or even Drive my Car (Ryusuke Hamaguchi).

It turns out, in fact, that CODA, jury prize at the last Sundance festival and first Apple-stamped film to be in the running for the Oscar for best picture, this weekend won a decisive award in Hollywood: the film by director Siân Heder was voted best film of the year by the Producers Guild of America (PGA), an association of more than 8,000 industry professionals, often considered an almost infallible barometer for the Oscars – since 2010, only three Best Picture winners have departed from the PGA list – in particular because its system of vote by classification, reserved for the choice of the best film, is modeled on that of the Academy of the Oscars.

CODA really called on deaf actors, unlike the couple François Damiens/Karine Viard in The Aries Family. Troy Kotsur, who won several awards for his role as a deaf father in CODA, is on his way to becoming the very first deaf actor in history to win an Oscar. This new edition of the Oscars therefore promises to be historic in more ways than one, given that it will probably be the very first time that a streaming platform has won the Grail for best film, unless a umpteenth twist at the last minute… Verdict on March 27th.
