Welcome to your first weekly roundup of our favorite new movies that have been added to Netflix in the last seven days. Below, we’ve got five movies you should watch on Netflix this weekend for those living in the US (and around the world for some).

Want to see our TV picks of the week? The week was marked by The Walking Dead and Ginny & georgia.

Lion (2016)

Ranking : PG-13
Language : English
Gender : Biography, Drama
Director: Garth Davis
Cast: Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara

Runtime: 118 mins / 1h 58m

Not available on the Netflix advertising component.

Our first film is among the first additions of the month and is not yet in Netflix’s top 10 this week.

Nominated for six Oscars, the film revolves around a man who returns home years after being adopted to discover his true origins and, hopefully, his birth family.

This moving film was a real hit with critics and an inspiration to families.

Of course, now is the time to invest in Dev Patel, with at least two major projects the actor is either starring in or in the works. He’s set to star in Wes Anderson’s movie, The wonderful story of Henry Sugar and The ape man.

Closer (2004)

Ranking : R
Language : English
Gender : Drama, Romance
Director: Mike Nichols
Cast: Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Clive Owen
Scriptwriter : Patrick Marble
Runtime: 104 mins / 1h 44m
Price : Nominated for 2 Oscars.

Keeping with the theme of Oscar-nominated movies, we’re going back nearly 20 years to 2004 when this romantic ensemble film was released to the world.

Closer chronicles what happens when a writer, a stripper, a photographer and a dermatologist engage in a series of romantic encounters with each other. The end result is a complicated tangle.

pale blue eye (2022)

Ranking : R
Language : English
Gender : Crime, Horror, Mystery
Director: Scott Cooper
Cast: Christian Bale, Harry Melling, Fred Hechinger
Scriptwriter : Louis Bayard, Scott Cooper
Runtime: 128 mins / 2h 8m

Netflix’s first major new movie for 2023 is Christian Bale and Harry Melling’s period crime flick, The Pale Blue Eye.

The title, which also hit select theaters this Christmas, tells the story of a retired detective who recruits a shrewd cadet named Edgar Allan Poe to help him solve a murder mystery at the Military Academy.

In our review of the film, we concluded:

“Given the cast and the use of Poe as a character in a murder mystery, this film should have been much stronger than it was. Melling’s performance and a strong ending save a very slow & tedious at first. »

King Kong (2005)

Ranking : PG-13
Language : English
Gender : Action, Adventure, Drama
Director: peter jackson
Cast: Naomi Watts, Jack Black, Adrien Brody
Scriptwriter : Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Peter Jackson
Duration of the movie : 187 mins / 3h 7m
Price : Won 3 Oscars.

Next, we move on to a movie that made it into the week’s top 10 and for good reason. It’s Peter Jackson’s iconic take on the classic story, which Netflix even adapted with the children’s series. Kong: King of the Apes.

The Guardian, at the time of its release, said the film “equals and even exceeds anything Jackson did in The Lord of the Rings.”

Long-time Netflix subscribers know that this isn’t the first time King Kong has been available on the service, but it’s the first time in almost 3 years, so it’s well worth rewatching.

March One (2022)

Ranking : TV-MA
Language : Portuguese
Gender : Drama
Director: Gabriel Martins
Cast: Cícero Lucas, Carlos Francisco, Camilla Damiao
Writer: Gabriel Martins
Runtime: 115 mins / 1h 55m

For our international spotlight this week, we recommend the latest ARRAY release on Netflix, the Brazilian LGBTQ drama. March One.

The new film, which will be released exclusively on Netflix on January 5, follows a united family who live their lives together but also separately, with one of them aiming to live on Mars.

The film earned a 100% score on RottenTomatoes from critics.
