When it comes to the 2023 Oscar, as always, there is usually controversy over the productions selected and ultimately the winning film. This is part of the atmosphere that reigns in the film industry: the awards ceremony allows some to reaffirm their tastes or, perhaps, to question them in order to open up to other stories and to other ways of telling them.
Depending on when each production was released, it happens that the Oscar nomination also represents an economic boost, because a part of the public feels engaged or interested in the story. As the ceremony approaches, it’s common to see people making lists of productions they want to see before the awards show. So that it doesn’t catch anyone off guard, we present to you a series of candidates for the ” best film at the 2023 Oscars.
The nominees to be selected in the category ” Best film of the 2023 Oscar.
On March 12, 2023, the Oscars will be awarded. This is an event that draws the attention of part of the public to the film industry. Although over time these ceremonies have been questioned as spectacle – they tend to be boring – they remain a key moment in the realm of passive entertainment.
Below, we present you some of the possible choices for the “Best picture” at the Oscars 2023:
babylon by Damien Chazelle
A romantic drama that, according to the trailer, will be full of excess. It brings together a top-notch cast, including Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva and Tobey Maguire. The first two, in the previews, are presented as the most important characters in the story.
The film is directed by Damien Chazelle, who won an Oscar for La La Land (2016). Although this film has yet to be released, based on those involved with the project and the footage shown, it looks like it could be one of the contenders. It will be in theaters on December 23.
empire of light by Sam Mendes
A drama directed by Sam Mendes. This film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on September 3. It’s a story marked by sanity and racism, portrayed by its protagonists Olivia Colman and Micheal Ward. Its release is scheduled for December 9 in the United States.
Avatar: The Way of the Water by James Cameron
James Cameron is directing one of the films likely to have the biggest impact on the industry this year, at least financially. When it comes to James Cameron, the filmmaker is generally distinguished by his ability to innovate in the way of filming and to obtain unprecedented results. For this factor, technology and in aspects such as makeup, it could be in the running for an Oscar and, perhaps, be in the category of “best film” of the year. Avatar, the way of the water is the second part of a saga of five films. It will be released on December 15.
Top Gun: Maverick by Joseph Kosinsky
The movie that brought moviegoers back to theaters in droves outside of franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The production, starring Tom Cruise, received an avalanche of positive reviews, others less kind, and the receptivity of an audience that accompanied the film in theaters for weeks. It was released on May 26 this year.
Elvis by Baz Luhrmann
A controversial character was expected for a production of the same ilk. Baz Luhrmann did it, with the work of Austin Butler and Tom Hanks in the lead roles. This is a production considered excessive due to its visuals. It’s a story that feels dense at times and yet moves forward to develop the story of one of the most influential figures in music and popular culture.
The Fabelmans by Steven Spielberg
It is one of the films that has received the most awards. It is a kind of autobiography, inspired by part of the life of its director, Steven Spielberg. The main character is Sammy Fabelman, a young man who aspires to become a filmmaker. The cast includes Gabriel LaBelle -who plays the role of Fabelman-, Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen and Judd Hirsch. Its release is scheduled for November 11, 2022.
The Whale by Darren Aronofsky
This film stars Brendan Fraser, a face that in recent months has enjoyed a kind of redemption after years of obscurity. He plays the role of an obese and doomed professor. These two factors condition part of his life, of the story, as he seeks to reconnect with his daughter, who is played by Sadie Sink, known for her work in the television series Stranger Things.
Bardo (or false chronicle of some truths) by Alejandro González Iñárritu
This filmmaker is one of the most constant presences at the Oscars ceremony and 2023 will be no exception. He already has four Oscars to his credit and with bardo I may add more. This production tells the story of a Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker who returns to his country. During this trip, he goes through an existential crisis which brings him to confront his family, his environment and his memories. The film was released on October 27, 2022.
The Son by Florian Zeller
One of the first attributes to emerge from this story is its casting, led by Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern, joined by actors such as Anthony Hopkins in a supporting – but no less relevant – role. This is an adaptation of the director’s own play. Its synopsis is as follows: “Peter’s busy life with his new partner Emma and their baby turns into chaos when his ex-wife Kate reappears with their teenage son, Nicholas, a troubled young man who is difficult to communicate with, aggressive and distant, and who has just dropped out of school.
She Said by Maria Schrader
This is a biographical drama that tells the story of two female reporters from the European Union. The New York Times Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who conducted and published a journalistic investigation into the sexual abuse of Harvey Weinstein, one of the film industry’s most famous producers. This work led to the #MeToo movement, through which different voices offered their testimonies to denounce the different forms of sexual abuse and assault in Hollywood. Part of the story features Carey Mulligan, Zoe Kazan, Patricia Clarkson, André Braugher, and Samantha Morton.
The academy tends to reward stories that have been shot through with drama or that, in recent years, resonate with social events. In this list, there are several that, due to their subject matter and cast, might have a chance of making it to the shortlist. However, we will have to wait a while to find out what these productions will be, and it is even possible that others will be added to files like this. Whatever the scenario, it’s likely that the 2023 Oscars “best picture” won’t be free from discussion.
