Ghost of tsushima anime: okazaki designs ronin, hunter for crunchyroll launch
Crunchyroll is bringing the spirit of Ghost of Tsushima to the small screen, and the initial character designs are already generating buzz. The streaming giant unveiled concept art featuring key figures from the game’s world – the Assassin, the Ronin, and the Hunter – who will populate the upcoming anime adaptation.
A samurai’s journey, animated
The project, spearheaded by Aniplex and directed by Takanobu Mizuno, pulls together a formidable creative team. Takashi Okazaki, the celebrated artist behind Afro Samurai, is leading the character design, promising a visual style that’s both brutal and beautiful. The anime will be a direct translation of Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game, meticulously adapting the core narrative and the intriguing Legends multiplayer mode.
Script duties fall to Satoshi Maejima and Gen Urobuchi, a dynamic duo from NITRO PLUS known for their work on titles like Demon Slayer and Sword Art Online. Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions, emphasized the project’s potential, stating that the game’s immersive world and mythological elements offer a rich foundation for the series. “Ghost of Tsushima’s rich, immersive world and its fantastical Legends mode based on Japanese mythology provide the perfect canvas for this project, and Aniplex is the perfect partner to translate Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game into a stunning new anime series.”
Originally slated for a 2025 release, the anime is now set to debut exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027. This marks a significant expansion for the PlayStation brand, leveraging the established popularity of Ghost of Tsushima to reach a new audience.
