Super mario galaxy movie unveils 65-tonne sand sculpture in frankston

A massive 65-tonne sand sculpture of Super Mario has been unveiled in Frankston, Victoria, ahead of the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships 2026 themed 'The Enchanted Realm'.

Colossal creation takes center stage

The enormous sculpture, crafted over six days, stands 7.5 meters long and 3.5 meters high, made from an astonishing 65 tonnes of sand – equivalent to roughly 10 male African elephants or around 685,000 Super Mario 64 game cartridges.

The gargantuan Mario artwork is a collaboration between the sculpting championships and Universal, in promotion of the upcoming animated film The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, set to release on April 1.

The movie will introduce fresh voices to iconic characters, featuring Brie Larson as Rosalina, Donald Glover as Yoshi, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., alongside returning stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black as Bowser. Star Fox hero Fox McCloud will also make an appearance, as revealed by a new poster shared by Nintendo today.
