BAFTA 2022: Dune at the top of the nominations, 3 French women in the running

If “Dune” is the race at the top of the nominations, with 11 citations, three French directors make the event at the BAFTAs: Julia Ducournau and Audrey Diwan, in the running for Best Director, and Céline Sciamma, nominated with “Petite Maman”.

After the Césars and before the Oscars, the world of cinema will have its eyes turned to Great Britain for the 75th BAFTA Awards ceremony, the high mass of the English 7th Art which will take place on Sunday 13 March.

And it is an American film that heads the nominations announced this Thursday, February 3: Dune by Denis Villeneuve, an ambitious adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic, which has 11 quotes. Including those for Best Film, Best Music and Best Photography, with choice places in the race for technical trophies. But not for the achievement.

That is “Cock-a-doodle Doo”, in English. Because two French filmmakers are in the running for the BAFTA for Best Director: Audrey Diwan, Golden Lion at the last Venice Film Festival thanks to L’Événement; and Julia Ducournau, Palme d’Or at Cannes with Titane. A historic face-to-face because two French directors had never found themselves in this category in the same year.

A year after Chloé Zhao’s triumph, it could well be that a woman wins again in this category, since Jane Campion is also nominated for The Power of the Dog, the second most cited film ahead of Belfast, with 8 nominations against 6.

Finally, it should be noted that Audrew Diwan and Julia Ducournau are not the only French representatives at the 2022 BAFTA Awards. Nor the only directors, because Céline Sciamma has entered the race for the prize for Best Foreign Language Film with Petite Maman, but will have strong to face the favorites that are Drive My Car and Julie (in 12 chapters), also named in other categories.

With Bruno Delbonnel (Best Photography for The Tragedy of MacBeth) and Alexandre Desplat (Best Music for The French Dispatch), France therefore leaves with 5 chances of trophies but will only be able to win 5 at best. Verdict on March 13, at the end of a ceremony where Spencer will be conspicuous by his absence: the film worn by Kristen Stewart has, surprisingly, received no nomination.
