The Batman celebrates another week in theaters and is the nation’s highest-grossing film of 2022. It’s already set the future in this new shared universe – the Bat-verse or Reeves-verse as some call it – with upcoming sequels and spin-off TV shows for HBO Max.
Along with praise for its direction, design, and Michael Giacchino’s epic score, The Batman is such a powerhouse because of the incredible cast performance. By bringing together eminent and talented actors, each with extensive and distinct careers, this film will long remain in the cultural zeitgeist.
Robert Pattinson
The Batman – 8.4
At the helm for The Batman performance-wise and wearing the iconic cowl is British actor, Robert Pattinson. He’s been a mainstay of pop culture since his first film as the heroic Hufflepuff, Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – which is still his second highest rated film on IMDb.
Although his past with historical films is rich in stories, which brought him international fame, The Batman is his highest rated film. That should come as no surprise – Pattinson’s exemplary performance starring a still-inexperienced Batman is what makes the movie so popular and unique among DC comic book movies.
Paul Dano
The Batman – 8.4
In front of Pattinson at The BatmanThe antagonist of The Riddler is Paul Dano. Taking inspiration from the Zodiac Killer, director Matt Reeves and Dano expose audiences to a unique take on the enigmatic Riddler. Interestingly, his origins are set to be further explained and explored by Dano in the upcoming Riddler: Year One comic series he’s writing.
Like Pattinson, The Batman is ranked as Dano’s best film on IMDb, but he has many other projects close to that title, including the 2007 one there will be blood and Showtime miniseries Escape to Dannemora. For his roles in these, Dano was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, respectively.
Zoe Kravitz
big little lies – 8.5
Zoë Kravitz embodies The BatmanDeuteragonist Selina Kyle aka Catwoman. This film takes inspiration from Jeph Loeb’s The Long Halloween comic book series and its sequel Dark Victory for its story and motivations, making it more than a typical cat burglar. She’s starting to become the hero, or rather the anti-hero, that fans adore – and thankfully that should also be complemented by the proposed Catwoman HBO Max series.
Kravitz began his rise to stardom in another comic book movie X-Men: First Class like Angel Salvadore. She received further accolades and accolades for her role as Bonnie on HBO’s big little lies. Although it started out as a miniseries, it won a second season and ended up being its highest-rated performance.
John Turturro
The night of – 8.5
Joining Dano in an antagonistic role is John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, a Gotham mobster who viewers also learn is Selina Kyle’s father. Interestingly, Falcone turns out to be the real target of the Riddler’s plans – planning to reveal and enforce his version of justice on Falcone to be the head of the cancer plaguing Gotham.
Turturro has been seen in other popular franchises, such as Transformers, but he is more widely known for his career in independent films and his collaborations with the Coen brothers and Adam Sandler. On top of that, and taking its No. 1 spot on IMDb, is the HBO miniseries The night ofin which he was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.
Jeffrey Wright
Westworld – 8.6
As expected, The Batman isn’t an origin story – it finds Bruce in his second year as a Caped Crusader, and while he still has a lot to learn, he can do it with Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon by his side. Despite previous popular portrayals by Gary Oldman and JK Simmons, Wright gave the character a unique take that helps the film shine.
Jeffrey Wright has an extensive resume, including in the james bond franchise, Boardwalk Empireand currently in Marvel’s What if?… like the voice of the Observer. However, he is probably best recognized for his role as Bernard Lowe in the HBO series, Westworldfor which he received consistent Emmy nominations.
Pierre Sarsgaard
Drug – 8.7
In a short but impactful role in The Batman, Peter Sarsgaard plays Gotham District Attorney Gil Colson. He, unfortunately, doesn’t survive the film, instead becoming a pawn and victim of the Riddler – perhaps opening the door for another DA, Harvey Dent, to appear in future movies or TV shows. Nonetheless, Sarsgaard gives a nuanced performance as a person of authority and power who inadvertently makes himself a servant of the corrupt system.
Sarsgaard has appeared in numerous films and shows, including recently The lost girl – which was directed by his wife, Maggie Gyllenhaal – and the Hulu miniseries Drug. The latter currently holds the No. 1 spot on Sarsgaard’s IMDb as he plays another lawyer, this time at the federal level, Rick Mountcastle, based on the real man.
Colin Farrel
real detective – 8.9
The Batman prepares really well for the future by bringing in another iconic member of Batman’s rogues gallery with Collin Farrell as Oswold Cobblepot aka the Penguin. His rise to power is an unintended consequence of the Riddler’s machinations, filling the void of influence in Gotham’s seedy underbelly left after Falcone’s death. That’s just one of the reasons fans are looking forward to his HBO Max series.
Farrell is of course a popular actor and totally unrecognizable idol in The Batman. We don’t say the same for his best performance as Detective Velcoro in HBO season 2 real detective. While the season received mixed reviews, compared to the previous season, her performance was praised.
Andy Serkis
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – 9.0
Also giving a new portrayal of the Wayne family legacy, The Batman reinterprets Alfred, his position and, above all, his relationship with Bruce. Although he’s downright dismissive and cruel to Alfred at first, Alfred never gives up on Bruce – and ultimately they reconcile once Bruce learns the truth about his parents.
Andy Serkis was an unexpected choice to play Alfred but it worked. As arguably one of the greatest physical actors around, his history in other major franchises is extensive, with the latest film in the the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Return of the King. His performances as Gollum still haunt viewers to this day, but including him in this film as Sméagol helps him claim the top spot.
