House of the Dragon, Pinocchio: 2023 Golden Globes Recap

Best series or best film of the year 2022, who were the big winners of the Golden Globes?

Last night, the world of the small and the big screen had their eyes riveted on the 2023 edition of the Golden Globes. After being deprived of air last year following accusations of sexism, racism and corruption, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association made a comeback on January 10.

As usual, the event was intended to reward the best series and films of the past year. Many productions won a statuette. Unsurprisingly, it is Everything Everywhere All At Once which has distinguished itself in many categories. Directed by Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan (Swiss Army Man), the science fiction film is among the most ambitious of recent years. While it didn’t pick up the ultimate accolade, it did offer its two lead actors an opportunity to be showered with honour.

Ke Huy Quan won the title of Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Waymond Wang. This marks a turning point in the career of the man we discovered in The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. For her part, Michelle Yeoh is more accustomed to ceremonies of the genre. She had already been nominated for the Bafta for Best Actress for Tiger and Dragon. She won this Tuesday, January 10, 2023 the prize for best actress in a comedy. The title of best actor was awarded to Colin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin.

The film of the year is The Fabelsman, directed by Steven Spielberg. Autobiographical, the film also offers its filmmaker the title of best director of the year. To the great displeasure of James Cameron who leaves empty-handed with Avatar: The Waterway. If the film is a hit in theaters, it is surprisingly not illustrated in the most prestigious categories.

Netflix also offers a beautiful statuette for the Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro. He imposes himself against Red alert from Pixar or Puss in Boots: The Last Wish from Dreamworks in the animated film category.

Note that the license Black Panther also won an award. Angela Bassett offers the second part of the saga a first prize. She is rewarded for her performance as Queen Ramonda. In 2019, the first part left empty-handed despite its nominations for original music and best song. He nevertheless distinguished himself at the Oscars a few weeks later.

House of the Dragon or The Rings of Power?

This summer, Prime Video and HBO waged a merciless battle to determine which of their series could win the title of production of the year. Backed by huge budgets, the entertainment giants have tackled two major works of fantasy on paper.

Both have been massively followed around the world. The critics were rather rave about them, even if the public expressed some reluctance. This Golden Globes ceremony offers victory to HBO.

The prequel to Game Of Thrones wins the title of drama series of the year against Better Call Saul and The Crown notably. Moreover, The Rings of Power is not one of the nominees this year. On the side of limited series, it is still HBO which imposes itself with The White Lotus: Sicily, second season of this new genre anthology. As usual, the American channel largely dominates the ranking of the evening.

It allows, for example, Zendaya to leave once again with the title of best actress in a drama series. On the other hand, it is a Hulu series that stands out in the category best actor in a comedy or musical series. Jeremy Allen White’s performance was rewarded last night. Hulu was also in the race to win the statuette of best series of the year with Only Murders in the Building and The Bear. Wednesdaywhich is a hit on Netflix and which will have a second season, was also in the running alongside hacks.

The Golden Globes have opened the season of American ceremonies. On March 12, it will be the turn of the Oscars to reward the best of the big screen. In France, the Césars will take place on February 24. The Bafta, which rewards British cinema, is due to take place on February 19 in London.
