The eclectic Afro-American jazzman Jon Batiste and the unexpected retro project Silk Sonic, carried by Bruno Mars, triumphed Sunday at the Grammy Awards, equivalent of the Oscars for American music.
Another emotional highlight of the evening was the appearance of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who asked artists and the world to support his country invaded by Russia.
A harbinger of their success, the gala evening of the 64th edition, moved from Los Angeles to Las Vegas due to the Covid-19 pandemic, opened at the start of the evening with an energetic performance by Silk Sonic .
Fine mustache for Bruno Mars, disconcerting bowl wig reminiscent of Mireille Mathieu for Anderson .Paak, the two men at the heart of this project inspired by the sounds, sequins and cake shovel collars of the 1970s, returned to the stage a little later to receive the coveted “Song of the Year” award.
The public of the MGM Grand Garden Arena found them again a little later for the “recording of the year”, another major category of the Grammy Awards.

“We’re doing everything we can to stay humble at this point, but in the business, that’s called a landslide victory,” Anderson .Paak said. “We love you all. Silk Sonic is paying for the tour tonight,” he told his unfortunate opponents.
Jon Batiste showed more elegance after receiving the Grammy Award for album of the year, considered the highest honor of the American music industry.
“I am deeply convinced of this, there is no better artist, better musician, better dancer, better actor. The creative arts are subjective and they touch people at a moment in their life when they need it. most needed”, launched the virtuoso musician when he received his prize, the fifth of the day.
Jon Batiste, 35, was the big favorite of the evening with eleven nominations. He was notably awarded for the music of the animated film “Soul” which won him an Oscar in 2021, but he competed in almost all styles (R&B, jazz, classical, etc.)

Another favorite, the young Olivia Rodrigo lived a mixed evening. If she was indeed crowned “revelation of the year”, a coveted prize to launch a career, she did not succeed in the grand slam in the four major categories that some predicted for her, like Billie Eilish two years ago.
The 19-year-old artist revealed by Disney Channel also received the prize for “best pop solo performance” for her title “Drivers license”, winning against big names like Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande and Brandi Carlile .
Eilish, Bieber and Lil Nas X were among the night’s top contenders in terms of nominations but left empty-handed, despite having memorable performances on stage.

Lady Gaga also provided the show by performing several songs from “Love for Sale”, her duet album with Tony Bennett, who presented her in a short video message.
Doja Cat saved the day by winning the Grammy for best pop duo performance, thanks to her collaboration with singer SZA on the hit “Kiss Me More”, a particularly successful mix of pop and rap sprinkled with disco glitter.
The Ukrainian President moved all the participants by taking the floor, via a video recording, to call on artists to support his people.
“War. What is the exact opposite of music? The silence of ruined cities and people killed,” he said, wearing his now usual khaki T-shirt, before a performance by John Legend, joined on stage by Ukrainian artists, Mika Newton and Lyuba Yakimchukt.
“Tell the truth about the war, on your social media, on TV. Support us in every way possible, all but silence. And after that will come peace,” he added.

The whimsical Kanye West was also in the running with his album “Donda”, two titles of which were awarded Sunday afternoon in the rap category, “Hurricane” and “Jail”.
The artist had obviously not made the trip to Las Vegas. He was originally scheduled to perform on stage but the organizers had let him know he was no longer welcome. In question: attacks on social networks against comedian Pete Davidson, in a relationship with his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, and against the host of the evening Trevor Noah which earned “Ye” a brief suspension from Instagram.
On the rock side, the Foo Fighters have won the three awards for which they were in the running, a week after the sudden death of their drummer Taylor Hawkins in Colombia, shortly before a concert.
The group of Dave Grohl, the ex-drummer of Nirvana, received the Grammys for best rock album, best rock song and best rock performance.
