Netflix’s hit series The Crown will have a fifth season and is set to cover the 1990s, a tumultuous time for the British monarchy, including the year Queen Elizabeth II described as her “annus horribilis”.

When is “The Crown” season 5 released?

Finally, there has been an update on the show’s release date but unfortunately it will be a long time before the new series drops on Netflix.
On Saturday, September 25, Netflix released a 60-second video of Imelda Staunton on the set of The Crown Season 5, which had a “message” to deliver.
In the style of the traditional Queen’s Christmas broadcast, Staunton revealed that Season 5 of The Crown will arrive on Netflix in November 2022.
She also paid tribute to her predecessors, Claire Foy and Olivia Colman who played the role in the first and last two seasons respectively.
The November 2022 release date might not come as a huge shock, considering there was a two-year gap between seasons three and four.
Who plays in season 5 of The Crown?

The first two seasons lasted from 1947 to 1964 and seasons three and four tackled from 1964 to 1990.
Seasons Five and Six are expected to cover the 1990s, and as a result, the main cast will be a bit older, bringing them closer to how we know them today.
BAFTA-winner and Oscar-nominated actress Imelda Staunton will play Queen Elizabeth II in seasons five and six of The Crown. She replaces Olivia Colman, who played a role in seasons three and four.
BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville will play Princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister in the new series, as Helena Bonham Carter.
Game of Thrones and Two Popes star Jonathan Pryce plays the late Prince Philip in season 5 of The Crown. He replaces Tobias Menzies who recently won an Emmy for his portrayal in season four.
Dominic West of The Affair will play Prince Charles in the new season of The Crown, replacing Josh O’Connor; and Tenet’s Elizabeth Debicki will play Diana, Princess of Wales in The Crown Season 5, succeeding Emma Corrin. O’Connor and Corrin both won Emmy Awards for their performances in Season 4.
Nevers star Olivia Williams plays Camilla Parker Bowles, succeeding Emerald Fennell.
Trainspotting and Elementary star Jonny Lee Miller played John Major, the Conservative Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1990 to 1997.
What will happen in season 5 of “The Crown”?
Originally billed as the final season, the fifth and sixth seasons of The Crown will follow the reign of Elizabeth II at the end of the 20th century, ending the series by bringing her reign into the 21st century. Creator Peter Morgan changed his mind by ending the series after five seasons to do the story “justice.”
He told Deadline, “As we began to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story, we would have to go back to the original plan and make six seasons. “
The 1990s were an eventful time for the British Royal Family and in 1992, on the 40th anniversary of her accession, Queen Elizabeth II described the year as her “annus horribilis”.
That year saw the breakdown of her children’s marriages: her son Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson separated in March, her daughter Princess Anne divorced Mark Phillips in April and her eldest son Prince Charles announced his separation from Princess Diana at the end of the year.
That same year, there was a fire at Windsor Castle and the opening of Buckingham Palace to the public to help pay for repairs and restoration.
The death of Princess Diana is expected to be addressed in season 5 or 6 of The Crown. Diana died in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997.
At the time, the Queen received a lot of criticism for failing to publicly address Diana’s death immediately afterwards and for not lowering the flag at half mast at Buckingham Palace. The day before Diana’s funeral, the Queen broadcast live from Buckingham Palace to pay tribute to Diana, describing her as an ‘exceptional and gifted human being’.
