AIX Lune Eglise sept2022 (4)Closed for 16 years to the public, the Madeleine church in Aix-en-Provence reopened last weekend for Heritage Days from September 17 until October 8, before a total reopening in 2025 after the last work phase. An event opening as part of the “5th Season – Biennale of art and culture 2022” since for these heritage days, this one received nothing less than the MOON, with Museum of the moon. An artistic installation which is an invitation to reverie and celestial contemplation.

Museum of the Moon, traveling artwork by British artist Luke Jerram depicts the moon from NASA’s detailed 120 dpi images of the lunar surface. Measuring seven meters in diameter, at an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimeter of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5 km of the moon’s surface. The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and a surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones.
The artist Luke Jerram thus questions the public space by creating large-scale sculptures, installations and performances. In 2016, he embarked on the construction of a 7-meter-diameter moon, a sculpture inflated with helium and lit from the inside, with a very high resolution print of images from NASA.

Luke Jerram’s multidisciplinary practice combines the creation of sculptures, installations, live arts and artistic projects. Living in the UK but working internationally for 19 years, Luke Jerram has created a number of extraordinary art projects that have thrilled and inspired people all over the world.

WHAT TO SEE: Wednesday to Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. until October 8
