Vicky Krieps crowned best European actress

When her name sounded Saturday night in the Harpa Conference and Concert Hall in Reykjavik (Iceland) when choosing the best actress of the 35e ceremony of the European Film Awards, the reaction of Vicky Krieps was not instantaneous. While the other nominees, those present in the room, were already applauding her, it took a second for the Luxembourg actress to react on her computer screen. No doubt due to transmission delays between Iceland and the West American coast where she seems to be currently staying (if we are to believe what she posts on her Instagram account). Or maybe she just needed a second to realize. Before turning her head for a brief moment, then putting her hands to her head, as if she didn’t believe what she had just heard.

“I didn’t prepare anything”

“I’m sorry, I haven’t prepared anything. I don’t have a good relationship with prices,” commented Vicky Krieps, visibly very moved. “I want to dedicate this to all women who need to be heard and seen. This need to heal from these deep deep wounds that we have carried for generations. And that we have to heal so that men and women can find each other again. A message that she also specified a few minutes later on her Instagram account.

Then, she wanted to thank Marie Kreutzer, the Austrian director of “Corsage”, as well as her children for having accompanied her in this project.

Soon the season of cinematographic ceremonies

This feature film has already earned this year a fine harvest of honors and awards for the Luxembourger. Let us mention in particular the Prize for the best performance gleaned at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, an interpretation prize at the Sarajevo festival but also, last week, a citation in the top 10 best actors of 2022 established by the New York Times. In the meantime, perhaps even better, at the start of 2023, with the season of cinematographic awards ceremonies among the most prestigious in the 7e art (Golden Globes, Oscars, BAFTA, etc.).

Next to the coronation of Vicky Krieps – which was hailed by Xavier Bettel (DP), the Prime Minister, on Twitter from Saturday evening –, “Corsage” (co-produced for Luxembourg by Samsa Film and Bernard MichauxBernard Michaux) did not win the two other categories where it was nominated (European film of the year and director of the year).

It must be said that these European Film Awards were largely dominated by the tragicomedy “Triangle of sadness” (“Without filter”) by Ruben Östlund. Already winner of the Palme d’or at Cannes, she has won four of the most important awards: European film of the year, European director of the year, European screenwriter of the year and best actor (for the Croat-Danish Zlatko Buric).

Finally, we also note that the three other Luxembourg co-productions in the running did not win. “My Love Affair with Marriage” (Anteviva Films) and “Le Petit Nicolas – What are we waiting for to be happy” (Bidibul Productions) were beaten by “Forbidden to dogs and Italians” in the category of best animated film. Just like Pamfir (Wady Media) in the European Discovery Fipresci Prize category.
