Each year for the Festival of Lightswhich welcomes nearly 2 million visitors, hotels, trains, restaurants and Airbnb are taken by storm. For this 2022 edition, which looks promising since without major health and safety restrictions, two years after the first Covid wave, attendance is expected to be strong.
The number of reservations on the platform Airbnb has been multiplied by three compared to 2021 and a lot ofhotels are complete. The prices of the remaining rooms are soaring, both in the center of Lyons than on the outskirts.
Up to 1,500 euros per night in a five-star hotel
Some prices make you dizzy to spend three nights during the 2022 edition of the Festival of Lights. By consulting booking sites like Booking and Hotels.com, we realize that prices have exploded. The practice of yield managementwhich uses supply and demand to decide prices like airlines, does not prevent hoteliers from posting a 80% filling rate.
In the 160 hotelsthere are still a few rooms at crazy prices less than a week before the start of the event.
For the very prestigious Villa Maiaa five-star hotel in the 5th arrondissement offering an impregnable lifestyle from Fourvière, count 1,500 euros per night, or 4,520 euros for three nights only.
For the same length of stay, you have to pay 1,482 euros at the Boscolo (5 stars), 2,170 euros for the Villa Florentine (5 stars), 2,810 euros for the Sofitel or 1,150 euros at the Radisson Blue in the famous tower. Part-Dieu pencil. At the Fourvière Hotel, count 1,392 euros for three nights, 891 euros at the Marriott Cité Internationale next to the Park head gold.
Very expensive mid-range hotels
Among mid-range hotels, prices are also exploding in Lyon. For a room in a Campanile in the 3rd arrondissement, you have to pay 840 euros for three nights, that of Perrache 927 euros, the Mob Hôtel de Confluence 670 euros, the Première Classe de Part-Dieu is displayed at 756 euros for three nights .
To hope to pay less, you have to move away from the center of the city and central public transport. At the Hôtel des Congrès in Villeurbanne, three nights are more affordable (487 euros), the B&B Hôtel de Caluire at 586 euros…
Airbnb bookings are skyrocketing
Hoteliers denounce the “unfair competition” of the Airbnb platform, which has recorded a tripling of its reservations.
“Although the vast majority of travelers still choose to stay in Lyon itself, Airbnb observes a dispersion of stays within the municipalities of the Lyon metropolitan area. To date, more than 25% of reservations within the Lyon metropolitan area for these four days have been made outside Lyon, such as Villeurbanne, Caluire-et-Cuire or Oullins – localities allowing to reach the center and its festivities in less than half an hour by transport”, observes the rental platform between individuals.
“In 2021, guests in the Lyon metropolitan area earned around 310 euros by renting their property over this period, i.e. an income twice as high as that achieved in 2019”, adds Airbnb.
