It’s only a matter of days before the opening of the Route du Rhum village in the corsair city and the hunt for last-minute accommodation is in full swing.
“People are ready to take what is left”
Saint-Malo Bay of Mont Saint-Michel Tourist Office is of course on the front line and must manage “a lot of requests”, attests Lisa Fonlupt, in charge of press relations, contacted last week.
People are looking for accommodation for several nights or even a week. They know they can’t be too demanding and are ready to take what’s left, without asking the price.
Surprisingly, there is also surprised visitors not to find accommodation in Saint-Malo during the All Saints holidays. “These are people who have neither ties to the region nor interest in ocean racing”, understands Lisa Fonlupt. If a lady who contacted the office did not really know what the Route du Rhum is, others may not have fully understood that it leaves from Saint-Malo…
Anyway it’s fine second week of vacation, that of the big start on Sunday November 6, which is the most popular. “From what I know, we are all head in the handlebars and the second week is very, very busy, savors Marie-Dominique Breitbeil, president of the Saint-Malo hotel club. But there must be some availability for the start of the holidays. »
Getting away from Saint-Malo? Not a bad plan…
Nothing is lost, therefore, especially since according to Lisa Fonlupt, “people are ready to move away” to find accommodation. “45 minutes from Saint-Malo, that is not a problem for them. » It is not a bad plan to house, for example, near Combourg or Dol-de-Bretagne provided they opt for the train, which will take them directly to the SNCF station, a 10-minute walk from the village of the Route du Rhum.
By staying at Dinard, also, you can avoid traffic jams and car parks by taking the sea buses. time of their reservation, “because they are not at all aware”. The requests still to come should make it possible to reach 100% filling, “but we follow the news and we are afraid of last minute cancellations linked to the shortage of fuel”.
For the time being in any case, “many people are booking in Dinard because Saint-Malo is full and the prices are still attractive”.
Prices are skyrocketing
What about prices, exactly? Open secret, they tend to increase sharply in Saint-Malo. Accommodation providers, hoteliers or private individuals are also entitled to charge very high season prices. Even if it means waiting for the last few weeks to open reservations? It is, whether we like it or not, the game of supply and demand, and some assume it, such as the Hôtel de la Villefromoy which explained to our colleagues West France having opened them at the beginning of September only “in order to adjust the prices”.
On the side of short term rentals, not everyone thought of it, such as the owner of a gîte in Pleslin-Trigavou who accepted reservations well in advance, and therefore at the same price as usual… But, in Saint-Malo, the Intra- muros on Airbnb traded higher, of course. Five months before departure, a (very nice) one-bedroom apartment, for a maximum of 4 people, was displayed at €800 per night on the weekend of November 5 and 6, when it is rented for less than €300 around August 15.
At present, still on Airbnb, there are still some availabilities, in the historic center, between 1er and November 6. A T2 of 45 m2 on the 4e floor without lift but “in the heart of Intra-Muros”, for two people, is rented at €206 per night (price excluding fees charged by the booking site). Another apartment of 38 m2, for four people, is displayed at 500 € per night.
On the Courtoisville side, a “charming house near the thermal baths”, for four people, is still available at 490 € per night.
An entire villa at more than €3,000 per night
On Booking, there are also a handful of possibilities, not Intra-Muros but in Saint-Malo all the same, around €1,000 for five nights for two adults between 1er and November 6. This seems more reasonable than this villa in Rochebonne with its breathtaking view – 160 m2, of course, for 8 people – for which you can still pay a little more than 15,000 € for these same five nights…
