How much will you need to spend on average?
The analysis is made on the 10 best rated domains in France and the average cost per person for a restaurant meal (including a starter and a main course), as well as the average price of accommodation per night for two people .
Although Espace Killy and the 3 Valleys are both ranked among the most popular areas, obtaining an excellent rating of 4.6 stars, the restaurants and accommodation they offer are far from being the most accessible.
To enjoy one of the most popular resorts without having to spend a fortune on accommodation, les 2 Alpes is the best option with accommodation for two at 111 euros per night on average.
As for the cheapest restaurants, they are in the sixth most popular area: the Portes du Soleil. A menu will cost an average of 26 euros per person.
To help consumers find the most profitable ski areas, Savoo analyzed the prices of ski passes, accommodation and restaurants, as well as the length of the slopes and the number of lifts in the most popular ski resorts of several European countries.
The “Les Portes du Soleil” domain offers the best value for money in Europe
Curious about which ski destinations offer the biggest areas at the best prices, Savoo has ranked the most popular resorts by the number and length of their runs, as well as the average ski pass price.
Unsurprisingly, France and Austria dominate the ranking and respectively rise six and three times among the 10 most profitable resorts in Europe.
At the top, the Franco-Swiss area “Les Portes du Soleil” and its 580 km of slopes. It is possible to take advantage of it from France, in the resorts of Morzine, Avoriaz, Les Gets or Châtel, and in Switzerland, in the resorts of Morgins or Champéry.
For more limited budgets, Châtel will be the best option since a stay for two adults costs around 1540 euros for a week, compared to more than 1700 euros in Morzine, Avoriaz and Les Gets.
The Trois Vallées area follows in second place thanks to its gigantic 600 km ski area, the largest in the world, for a daily rate of 66 euros per adult. The most affordable large resort around will be Les Menuires, where renting a studio for two should cost around 800 euros per week during school holidays.
Finally, the Austrian ski resort Skiwelt Wilder Kaiser Brixental comes third with its 258 km of slopes, 90 lifts and an adult ski pass at 57 euros per day. With a wide range of options, the average cost of a holiday apartment for two people for a week is only 200 euros on average there.
If having access to kilometers of slopes is a real asset, not all skiers will appreciate these immense areas in the same way depending on their level.
Beginners will feel safer on a wide, groomed green run or on a moderate blue run. Thus, the following resorts, with the greatest number of easy runs, will be the best suited for the less reassured:
- Les 3 Vallées – 312 km of easy slopes (France)
- Les Portes du Soleil – 310 km of easy slopes (France/Switzerland)
- Tignes – Val d’Isère – 170 km of easy slopes (France)
As for the more adventurous, they will find their happiness in the resorts with the longest difficult slopes:
- Les 4 Vallées – 103 km of difficult slopes (Switzerland)
- Via Lattea – 84 km of difficult slopes (France)
- Les 3 Vallées – 72 km of difficult slopes (France)
Methodology :
For this research, we identified seven of the most popular countries for skiing in Europe and analyzed the best ski areas according to several parameters, including the average cost of a day pass, the total length of the slopes, the number of ski lifts and the average rating of the areas. We’ve also taken a look at the top 20 rated resorts in France and analyzed the average cost of a meal per person, as well as the average price of a night for two people at each resort. Finally, we used Vinted to determine the average cost of second-hand ski gear in France.
All searches were conducted between 7.12.2021 and 22.12.2021.
