The price of holidays will explode this summer: here’s how to save money

At the start of 2023, all prices continue to rise. And the holidays are not immune to inflation. In January 2023, the price of travel was 11.6% more expensive than in January 2022. And this is likely to increase further by summer.

Up to 40% more expensive

If the prices increase on average by 10%, sometimes it is much more. Laura was able to experience it. Last year, when booking in February, she had paid €2,700 for two weeks “all in” in Corfu. This year, even if we go even further in advance, the same holidays on the same dates are displayed at 3,700 €, an increase of almost 40%…

“Everything is increasing, it would be illusory to think that travel will not be affected”, confirmed the spokesperson for TUI to our colleagues from Sudinfo.

Four tips for paying less

However, there are some tips for finding good deals.

– First tip: don’t wait to book. In recent years, it has become more and more complicated to find good deals at the last minute. As prices will continue to rise, it is best to book well in advance. Tour operators offer offers “early booking” for those who book several months in advance.

– Second tip: watch for promotions. More and more consumers shop according to promotions in this or that supermarket. There are also offers, promotions and temporary discounts at travel agencies and tour operators. To benefit from the best prices, as in all areas, it is therefore important to compare. This can often lead to significant savings. Rather than sticking to your original idea or the seaside town you’ve been going to for years, don’t hesitate to broaden your horizons and why not choose your destination based on prices and promotions.

– Third tip: take advantage of the new school calendar. As we know, the month of July is always in high demand and it is during this period that prices are the highest. But this year, the new school calendar can lead to opportunities and great savings. Indeed, in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, the Easter holidays will take place particularly late, during the first two weeks of May. This can also be an opportunity to bring forward your summer vacation and go to Belgium or to a sunny destination and for prices that are often much lower than in July and August. The icing on the cake: it is also a way to avoid the crowds and international tourists.

– Last tip: Book even if it means changing your mind afterwards. Many agencies and tour operators offer formulas with free cancellation. This allows you to already book your summer vacation now so that you are sure to have something and pay a reasonable price. However, don’t let that stop you from continuing to search. You may very well come across a great promotion in the coming weeks and you can always cancel your first reservation free of charge. Some operators also offer modify your reservation for free and its destination until a certain date. Take advantage of it, on the one hand it gives you a guarantee and on the other hand it does not close the door to change and a possible good deal that will arise.

By applying all of these tips, you should be able to book your summer vacation at a reasonable price despite inflation.
