Pokémon pokopia soars to $22m weekend debut on switch 2

Pokémon Pokopia ignited on Nintendo Switch 2, smashing sales records with 2.2 million copies sold during its launch weekend. The life simulation game’s success underscores Nintendo’s strategic bet on its latest console, even as supply constraints lingered in some regions.

A resounding success for nintendo

The game shifted 1 million units in Japan alone within the first four days, a feat achieved despite reports of physical version shortages. Amazon briefly increased the price of the boxed copy by $10, reaching $80, a testament to the game's immediate demand. Nintendo's stock price responded positively to the news, reflecting investor confidence in the new title's potential.

While 2.2 million copies fall short of Resident Evil 4’s5 million sales, Pokopia’s exclusivity to the Switch 2 is a key factor. With just over 17 million units sold to date, roughly 1 in 8 Switch 2 owners now possess a copy. It has already surpassed the launch sales of Kirby and the Forgotten Land (1.76 million) and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (less than 1 million on Switch 2).

The game’s performance is particularly noteworthy when compared to Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which sold 3.89 million units since its launch last year (and was also available on the original Switch). IGN’s review praised Pokopia as “an enjoyable building and town simulator that capitalizes on the charming personalities of its monsters.” The game's blend of creative building and creature collection has resonated with players and critics alike.

The success of Pokopia may signal a new era for Pokémon spin-offs. The original Pokémon Stadium on the N64 holds the record for the best-selling Pokémon spin-off with 5.4 million units. However, the combined sales of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Red and Blue reach 5.8 million, suggesting Pokopia has significant potential.

Developers are already addressing some initial player concerns, with guides available on optimizing environment and Pokémon comfort levels. The game’s initial reception suggests a long shelf life, positioning it as a potential evergreen hit for Nintendo. The question now is whether Pokopia can surpass the legacy of Pokémon Stadium and claim the title of the best-selling Pokémon spin-off of all time.
