Quantic dream faces star wars eclipse crisis: layoffs loom, future uncertain
A shadow hangs over Quantic Dream, the studio behind immersive narrative experiences like Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human, as a new report paints a grim picture of the company’s future and the fate of its ambitious Star Wars Eclipse project.
Star wars eclipse plunges into uncertainty amidst studio woes
Just months after launching Spellcasters Chronicles in early access, Quantic Dream abruptly canceled the live-service game, triggering layoffs that could impact a significant portion of its workforce. Industry insiders, citing sources within the company and French gaming news outlet gamekult, suggest that the challenges extend far beyond a single failed title.

‘Lack of resources’ threatens the high republic saga
According to gamekult, Star Wars Eclipse is now struggling with a critical shortage of resources – a worrying sign given its planned integration of Quantic Dream’s signature story-driven gameplay with the established lore of the High Republic era. The project, initially unveiled in a spectacular cinematic trailer in 2021, has largely faded from public view, despite persistent rumors of development hurdles and staffing difficulties.
Union efforts to save eclipse
Striking staff at Quantic Dream, protesting the potential layoffs, are reportedly attempting to rally support and prevent the complete collapse of Eclipse. The STJV union is pushing for a majority agreement to mitigate the impact, hoping that experienced developers from the scrapped Spellcasters Chronicles can be redeployed to salvage the Star Wars title. A delegation from Lucasfilm was slated to visit the studio on June 25th to assess the project’s progress, signaling the high stakes involved – a clear message that the project's viability hangs precariously.
Netease’s shifting priorities fuel concerns
Quantic Dream’s troubles are further compounded by ongoing concerns surrounding its relationship with Chinese owner NetEase. Last year, the studio faced closure fears following a pullback from western gaming companies by the Chinese conglomerate. CEO Guillaume de Fondaumière recently reassured fans that the Paris and Montreal studios remain unaffected, highlighting the studio’s strong financial performance in 2024 and citing “exceptional results” from its back-catalog. However, the cancellation of Spellcasters Chronicles and the looming layoffs cast a pall over the future, particularly as NetEase recently cut funding to the Yakuza franchise creator Toshihiro Nagoshi’s Gang of Dragon project.
A release window remains elusive
Despite years of development and countless delays, a release window for Star Wars Eclipse remains elusive. The project’s future, and indeed the future of Quantic Dream itself, hangs in the balance as the studio navigates a complex web of financial pressures and workforce concerns. The fight to save Eclipse is now underway.
