Take-Two CEO Defends GTA 6's Digital-Only Release, Calls Physical Discs 'Outdated'

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has defended the company's decision not to release Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) on physical discs, stating that discs 'don't really make sense for the consumer' in today's digitally driven gaming landscape.

Zelnick made the comments during a Q&A session with analysts following the release of Take-Two's Q1 2027 financial results. He noted that the majority of the company's Business is already digitally distributed, with over 90% of its titles sold digitally.

Zelnick's Arguments Against Physical Discs

Zelnick argued that with most games requiring online registration to play, the distinction between digital and physical copies becomes less significant for consumers. He suggested that downloading games digitally is often more convenient than purchasing physical discs.

Zelnick also pointed out that, like the recorded music industry, there will still be room for occasional physical releases, such as special editions or collector's items. However, for the majority of games, a digital-only approach is the way forward.

Sony's Discontinuation of PlayStation Discs

Zelnick's comments come as Sony faces backlash over its decision to discontinue the production of PlayStation game discs from 2028. Sony has maintained that the move will have no negative impact on its Business, but the video game community remains divided on the issue.

Some gamers have expressed concerns about video game preservation and ownership, while others have called for a boycott of PlayStation products in protest. The UK's Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA) has also criticized Sony's decision, labeling it 'a triumph of corporate convenience over consumer choice'.

As the debate surrounding physical media in gaming continues, it remains to be seen how the industry will evolve in the coming years. For now, it appears that Take-Two is firmly committed to a digital-first strategy for its major releases like GTA 6.
