Following a 2022 ceremony boycotted by a large part of Hollywood due to questionable practices (corruption, hate speech, racism, etc.), the January 2023 session wishes to have a facelift.
An institution plagued by business
The 2022 edition had been abandoned by its traditional television broadcaster, NBC, following accusations against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (90 journalists who make up the Golden Globes jury). At first, no member of the jury was black and the films produced by black directors, although well received by critics, had not been selected by the committee. Conversely the Emily in Paris series had been nominated in the best series category as well as its heroine in the best actresses category. This selection had created an uproar given the quality of his remarks. But it was without counting on the accusations of the Los Angeles Time which had revealed that the members of the HFPA would have received many gifts for the release of the series. In addition, luxurious trips to France, dinners and VIP parties have been organized on behalf of Paramount studios even though the jury is already graciously remunerated. This series of revelations was followed by an unprecedented boycott by Hollywood, putting the association in a state of crisis.
A fundamental reform before the 80th edition
The failure of the previous edition did not leave the institution amorphous. An in-depth change has been launched by the association of journalists to hope to return to the front of the stage with the support of Hollywood. The jury is now made up of 52% women and 51.5% people from ethnic minorities. The HFPA also prohibited its judges from accepting any gratuities from productions or studios. The president, Helen Hoehne, guarantees it to the HollywoodReporter, “it’s really not the old HFPA anymore”. Despite these statements, Tom Cruise, who was a hit with Top Gun: Maverick and Brenda Fraser have already announced that they are boycotting the ceremony.
Nominations for the 2023 ceremony
Headlining the nominations are The Banshees of Inisherin by Martin McDonagh (8 nominations) and Everything Everywhere All At Once by Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan (6 nominations). Among the best known who compete equally, The Fabelmans by Spielberg (5 nominations) and the highly anticipated babylon Canadian Damien Chazelle. James Cameron, for his part, gets two nominations for his film Avatar: the Way of Water.
