On September 4, 2022, the skippers will be on the starting line of the Golden Globe Race: a mythical race around the world non-stop, without assistance or technological aid. An event in partnership with France 3 Pays de la Loire.
A timeless race, The Golden Globe Race takes us back 50 years to a time when electronics on board boats did not exist. A solo world tour where only the sailors are responsible for their navigation.
This year, 16 sailors of 10 different nationalities will take up the challenge. Among them, Damien Guillou and Arnaud Gaist, two French skippers who are embarking on this exceptional race.
Originally from southern Finistère, Damien Guillou is a seasoned sailor. For the 39-year-old man, the idea of setting off in the Golden Globe race was born alongside Jean-Jacques Laurent of PRB, when he was Kevin Escoffier’s boat captain in the last Vendée Globe. Two years later, Damien Guillou is about to cross the start line of this timeless solo round the world race.
The sailor, who notably has seven Solitaire du Figaro to his credit, has just won the prologue to the Golden Globe Race “The SITraN Challenge”. A fine demonstration by the skipper of PRB who managed to win this 240-mile race.
Skipper for more than 30 years, participating in the Golden Globe Race is not only a challenge for Arnaud Gaist, it is above all the realization of a dream. Even before knowing the existence of this race, the man already had plans to race around the world the old fashioned way.
For his first participation, his objective is above all to finish the race and bring his boat back no matter what.
Since Saturday August 20, the Golden Globe Race village has opened its doors on the Place du Vendée Globe in Les Sables d’Olonne to celebrate and honor adventurers. On the program of the festivities until the day of the big departure: fireworks, concerts, parade of boats, guinguette, initiation to old-fashioned navigation… Visitors can come and see the boats and why not come across one of the skippers!
And this Wednesday, August 24 at 3:00 p.m., Sablais and holidaymakers will be able to admire from the quays, La Grande Parade des Olonnois with the skippers of the GGR 2022. A parade that will be visible from both sides of the channel.
An extraordinary race
Alone facing the sea and its unforeseen events, the skippers will sail only with the equipment of the time: sextant, paper map, winding chronometer… During the second edition, the sea had put the skippers to the test and many abandoned had been deplored. Only five people took up the challenge.
The new edition of this world tour unlike any other begins on Sunday 4 September. Will one of them succeed in doing better than Jean-Luc Van Den Heede who crossed the finish line as the winner on January 29, 2019 after 211 days 23 hours and 12 minutes spent at sea?
Throwback to the arrival of the winner of the 2th editing
France 3 Pays de la Loire is accompanying the event and will be live from the village on Saturday 3 September. Follow the preparations the day before departure alongside Richard Coffin in the 12/13 and 19/20 Pays de la Loire at 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
All the news of the race can be followed on our website and on our social networks.
