Golden Globe Race: Opening of the village and departure on September 4

Les Sables d’Olonne is preparing to relive these unique moments when the city honors sailors ready to challenge the oceans. For the inauguration of the village on Saturday, Place du Vendée Globe, the crowd was already there. Offshore racing enthusiasts,foffshore icionados and many families were thus the first to survey the pontoons and paths of the village.

A popular fervor that will intensify until the big start, on Sunday September 4th. During the inauguration, the mayor of Les Sables d’Olonne, Yannick Moreau wanted to salute “the skippers, the partners, the volunteers who make this incredible adventure possible”. The elected official also recalled the incredible story of “this epic which began in 1968 and which continues today in Les Sables d’Olonne with its twists and its unimaginable scenario”. And the city councilor to continue: “if I was at Netflix, I would make a series of it! »
The day allowed the public to discover the rich history of the race. They were also able to get to know and encourage the 17 skippers of 11 different nationalities who will take the start of the longest sporting event in the world. Then, many of them continued the day by surveying the pontoons where the boats are moored. The children were able to have fun on the merry-go-round which was also installed. In the evening, a concert with the rock group of Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, winner of the last edition, will also take place. The day will end with a majestic fireworks display launched from the bay.

Waiting impatiently for the big departure
It is therefore the beginning of a fortnight full of events. On a daily basis, workshops, events, concerts and television programs will be open to the public. Everyone will be able to discover the universe specific to the Golden Globe Race with a space dedicated to the history of what remains the first non-stop round the world race in history.
Next Wednesday will also be one of the highlights of this fortnight. The skippers will indeed parade in the afternoon in the famous channel of Port-Olona then will compete in a coastal course. The day will end with traditional sea songs in the early evening.
The following Saturday, place at the Great twinning festival where all the towns twinned with Les Sables d’Olonne will be honored throughout the day. Friday, September 2, a musical show, hosted by a DJ (DJ Loran) will also be offered. It will already be time to say “goodbye”: on Sunday 4 September, from 1 p.m., the skippers will leave the port to set off on their great adventure.
These modern-day adventurers will therefore be 17 – from 11 nationalities – on the starting line. Among them, two French skippers will set off, Damien Guillou (winner of the prologue) and Arnaud Gaist. All have only one ambition: to go all the way and give everything to succeed Jean-Luc Van Den Heede.
