Golden Globes 2023, series side: the coronation of “The White Lotus” and the joke “House of the Dragon”

If they rightly rewarded the satirical miniseries of HBO and the mockumentary “Abbott Elementary” on the comedy side, the voters preferred the spin-off of “Game of Thrones” to the much better “Better Call Saul” and “Severance”…

In bad shape since the cancellation of the Golden Globes ceremony last year, the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association obviously wanted to please everyone. The results of the 80th edition of its prizes, awarded on Tuesday January 10 in Los Angeles, resemble, on the series side, an attempt to compromise between critical success and audience performance.

In some cases, this balancing act results in deserved prizes. Abbott Elementaryvery funny and endearing mockumentary (mockumentary, The Office) in a Philadelphia elementary school, dominates the comedy category with three statuettes. The Bearfavorite of the past season, is content with the prize for best comic actor for Jeremy Allen White… yet much more moving than it is funny.

Nothing to say either of the crushing victory of The White Lotus, side miniseries, with two awards, including that of the best actress for the indescribable Jennifer Coolidge. Evan Peters is crowned best actor for the very popular Dahmer. We cannot deny the actor, a specialist in disturbing characters, a certain talent for making people feel uncomfortable. A talent also possessed by Amanda Seyfried, justly rewarded for The Dropout.

It is on the drama side that things go wrong. Zendaya picks up a deserved second Golden Globe for Euphoria, critical darling. Among men, Kevin Costner, hero of the ultra-popular Yellowstonecreated a slight surprise.

But what about the most coveted award, that of the best drama series? We were waiting Severance, best novelty of the year. She left empty-handed. We hoped that Better Call Saul is finally rewarded after six nominations (and 46 Emmy nominations!). In vain. The HFPA preferred House of the Dragona talkative and boring spin-off from Game Of Throneswhich tramples the magnificent The Crown. A choice that leaves you speechless…
