The 2022 Golden Globes announce their nominees despite the controversy

The much-maligned Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominations for the 2022 Golden Globes on December 13. Belfast by Kenneth Branagh and The Power of the Dog by Jane Campion are currently leading the dance.

The 79th Golden Globes, which usually launch the race for the Oscars, unveiled the nominations for this new vintage on Monday with a somewhat bitter taste since the HFPA, an organization of foreign journalists specializing in American cinema who elect each year the nominees for the Golden Globes, is caught up in the controversy since an article from Los Angeles Times released a few days before the last ceremony (virtual ceremony, for obvious reasons) revealed the cruel lack of diversity, questionable practices and chaotic organization of the institution.

Last May, the NBC channel, the ceremony’s usual broadcaster, announced the deprogramming of the Golden Globes from its antenna, leaving the HFPA more helpless than ever. Ditto on the side of Hollywood studios and its stars. Scarlett Johansson mentioned in particular inappropriate behavior – “ bordering on sexual harassment in the words of the actress – from members of the association, while Tom Cruise returned his rewards. Netflix and Warner studios had announced that they were ending all relations with the HFPA. Several American media, such as Collider, have since decided to boycott the ceremony. No one knows for the moment what form these 79th Golden Globes will take although the association claims to have integrated new members, reviewed its code of conduct and changed its mode of operation in depth.

On the side of the nominees, Belfast (Focus Features) by Kenneth Branagh and The Power of the Dog (Netflix) by Jane Campion share the lead, with seven nominations each. Are also named, in the category “best dramatic film”, dune of Denis Villeneuve or CODA, american remake of The Aries Family, which met with great success at the last Sundance Festival. On the series side, Succession (HBO) is cited in five categories.

An edition that also gives pride of place to French actors, like Marion Cotillard, nominated in the category “Best actress in a musical or comedy” for Annette by Leos Carax, but also Omar Sy, named in the category “Best actor in a series” for the phenomenon Lupine (Netflix), or Tahar Rahim in the category “Best Actor in a Miniseries” for his role in The Serpent (Netflix) and composer Alexandre Desplat nominated for the soundtrack of The French Dispatch by Wes Anderson. On the other hand, no French film appears in the list of the best foreign films. The full list of nominees can be found here.

The ceremony will take place on January 9, 2022.
