Baldur's gate fans forge epic sequel remake through mods
Forget official DLC – the Baldur's Gate 3 community is taking matters into its own hands, embarking on an ambitious project to recreate the entirety of the original Baldur's Gate within Larian's acclaimed RPG. While the studio focuses its resources on the next Divinity title, a dedicated group of modders is breathing new life into a beloved classic, proving that the true potential of BG3 extends far beyond what Larian initially envisioned.
A humble beginning blossoms into a massive undertaking
The project, dubbed “Deathbringer's Reign,” began modestly in August 2023 when modder 786r786, initially experimenting with Baldur's Gate 3’s robust modding tools, recreated Candlekeep—the iconic starting area of the original game—as a simple proof of concept. The overwhelmingly positive response from players quickly transformed the endeavor into something far grander. “The reaction was incredible,” 786r786 told Rock Paper Shotgun. “I received countless requests to expand it into a full campaign, and I was fortunate enough to attract some incredibly talented modders who volunteered to help.”
Unlike creating standalone BG3 expansions, crafting a full campaign offers a degree of freedom and control. The team can meticulously shape the player's environment without being constrained by the vast scope of the base game, a significant advantage when attempting to replicate a sprawling RPG like Baldur's Gate.
Rebuilding a classic: challenges and innovations
The Deathbringer's Reign team, now a collaborative effort, is meticulously planning the adaptation of the Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate. The project will divide the original game’s map into at least eight distinct zones, incorporating random encounters to mirror the original's exploration dynamic. However, recreating Baldur's Gate itself—the game's sprawling urban hub—presents a unique challenge, given the original's dense interior design and BG3’s limitations.
“The original game had over 100 interiors, whereas BG3 features around 40 buildings in Lower City,” 786r786 explained.
