Clueless reboot dreams derailed: alicia silverstone’s series shelved
The shimmering promise of a Clueless revival has vanished. Peacock has reportedly pulled the plug on its development of a new series starring the original Cher, Alicia Silverstone, effectively ending a project that had been simmering for over a year.

A familiar story, a difficult road
Variety first broke the news, citing a lack of movement on the project. While whispers of renewed interest persist – reportedly fueled by Silverstone’s own impassioned pitch – the initial enthusiasm has cooled considerably. Silverstone herself, speaking to Entertainment Tonight back in April 2025, acknowledged the project’s nascent stage, admitting she approached the venture with considerable trepidation, fearing the potential to tarnish a beloved classic. ‘Where we are at with that is that it’s very early stages,’ she stated, ‘I’m obviously excited.’
The actress, known for her distinctly modern and often witty approach, expressed a desire to evolve Cher beyond the surface-level caricature, hinting at a “more thoughtful” portrayal for the character in 2025. ‘I can’t wait to step back into Cher’s skin and her fancy designer shoes that will be gently used. Of course, duh. Because she’s evolved, this is 2025. She’s not wearing the new stuff. Unless it’s, you know, sustainable or vegan.’
The creative team behind the project – including writers Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz (known for Gossip Girl and The OC) and Jordan Weiss – were also attached. Producers Silverstone and Amy Heckerling, the film’s originator, had clearly invested significant energy into the concept.
This isn’t the first time a Clueless sequel has struggled to take flight. In 2020, CBS TV Studios had already explored a series centered on Dionne Davenport, only to abandon the project after Peacock picked it up. The journey to a fresh perspective on this iconic story continues to prove… bumpy.
The enduring appeal of Clueless, and the challenges of adapting it for a modern audience, remain a potent reminder that even the most cherished properties require careful navigation. The decision to shelve this iteration highlights the inherent risk involved in revisiting established franchises, a risk that, ultimately, Peacock appears to have decided outweighed the potential reward.
