DC is pulling back the curtain on its wildly successful ‘Elseworlds’ project, Dark Knights of Steel, with the announcement of a sprawling 12-issue sequel. Written by Tom Taylor – the architect of Injustice: Gods Among Us – and illustrated by Otto Schmidt, this series promises a darker, more brutal reimagining of the DC Universe.
A medieval fantasy dc – forget the justice league
Prepare for a world where the House of El reigns supreme as the House of Steel, the Wayne family commands a formidable war-machine empire, and Amazonia and the Kingdom of Storms are locked in a perpetual state of tense alliance. This isn’t the gleaming, optimistic DC we’re used to; it’s a fractured landscape dominated by warring kingdoms, manipulated by shadowy shape-shifters – a clear nod to Game of Thrones.
Taylor, a man who’s clearly wrestled with the foundational myths of both comic books and epic fantasy, states, “I was raised on comic books and fantasy novels. From as early as I can remember, my mind has been filled with universes of great heroes standing against corrupting evil and injustice.” He’s clearly channeling Tolkien and Waid, alongside the darker tones of Simone and Ennis, to forge this uniquely twisted vision.
The core concept – a collision of high fantasy and superheroic grit – is, frankly, intoxicating. Taylor himself put it succinctly: “Forging two of my favorite things together with heat vision and an anvil is my absolute happy place.” And, with a characteristic bluntness, he added, “I’m sorry in advance for all the terrible things that happen.”

Dark Knights of Steel II #1 will hit shelves on July 15, 2026. Alongside the main series, DC is releasing a special prequel, Dark Knights of Steel II Special: Heir to the Sea #1, which delves into the origins of Aquaman – a story previously serialized in Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter.
