Dewey declines big bucks to return to 'malcolm'

The reunion everyone anticipated just got a little less complete. Erik Per Sullivan, the beloved Dewey from Malcolm in the Middle, has reportedly turned down a “buckets of money” offer to reprise his role in the upcoming reboot, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair. The revelation, shared by Jane Kaczmarek (Lois) in a recent interview with The Guardian, throws a slight curveball into the highly anticipated return of the iconic family.

A master's degree takes priority

While the news initially surfaced back in June 2025, when Bryan Cranston (Hal) revealed Sullivan's pursuit of a master's degree at Harvard, Kaczmarek’s comments provide a more detailed, and frankly, delightful explanation. Apparently, Sullivan’s academic pursuits—specifically, a deep dive into the works of Charles Dickens—have completely captivated him. The actor, now 34, is apparently thriving as a student, prioritizing intellectual pursuits over a lucrative return to television.

Cranston’s initial conversation with Sullivan, recounted at the time, paints a picture of a man firmly committed to a new path. “He goes, ‘Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do it. But it’s fantastic,’” Cranston recalled, adding, “He’s actually going to Harvard… He said, ‘Oh God, no, I haven’t acted since I was nine or something.’” Sullivan’s decision to step away from acting at just 19, following the show's original run from 2002-2006, underscores a conscious choice to forge a different identity.

The good news for die-hard fans? The rest of the core cast—Frankie Muniz (Malcolm), Cranston, Christopher Kennedy Masterson (Francis), Justin Berfield (Reese), and Kaczmarek—are all on board for the four-part miniseries. Emy Coligado also returns as Piama, Francis’s wife. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark steps in to portray the grown-up Dewey, a significant shift for the character. New faces joining the ensemble include Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae as Jamie and Kelly, the family’s youngest siblings, and Keeley Karsten and Kiana Madeira as Malcolm’s daughter Leah and girlfriend Tristan, respectively.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, which revolves around Malcolm’s return home for his parents’ 40th-anniversary celebration, premieres on Hulu and Hulu for Disney+ on April 10. It seems even a generous offer couldn’t lure Dewey away from the pursuit of literary enlightenment—a testament to a man prioritizing intellectual curiosity over television stardom.
