The reunion of the Miller family in Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair just got a whole lot less quirky. Erik Per Sullivan, the actor who brought the delightfully odd Dewey to life, has reportedly turned down a substantial offer to reprise his role in the Hulu reboot, opting instead to continue his academic pursuits at Harvard University. This development throws a subtle wrench into what was anticipated as a nostalgic return to the beloved sitcom’s chaotic charm.
A scholar's choice over hollywood millions
Jane Kaczmarek, who portrayed the iconic Lois, spilled the details during a recent interview with The Guardian. The offer, she revealed, was “buckets of money,” a testament to the enduring appeal of the original series. Yet, Sullivan, now 34, politely declined, prioritizing his studies of Dickens—and seemingly a bright future beyond the realm of acting. This isn't a recent development; reports first surfaced in June 2025 indicating Sullivan's dedication to earning his master’s degree.
Bryan Cranston, returning as Hal, previously shared a similar anecdote, recounting Sullivan’s enthusiastic initial reaction to the show’s revival followed by a firm, “Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do it.” Cranston's assessment of Sullivan's decision felt almost admiring: “He’s actually going to Harvard. He’s really, really smart.” The actor’s abrupt departure from acting after the original series concluded in 2006, just four years after his 19th birthday, suggested a conscious decision to explore different avenues, a path he appears to be firmly committed to.
The core crew remains, plus some new faces

Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae will portray the family’s youngest siblings, Jamie and Kelly – the latter of whom had a brief appearance as a baby during the original run. Keeley Karsten joins the cast as Malcolm’s daughter, Leah, and Kiana Madeira as his girlfriend, Tristan.
