Disney+ scores spanish content boost with rtve deal
Disney+ just got a whole lot more interesting for subscribers in Spain. A newly inked agreement with RTVE, Spain’s public broadcaster, will bring a selection of the broadcaster's top programming to the streaming platform starting March 31st, signaling a strategic partnership aimed at bolstering content offerings and competition within the increasingly crowded streaming landscape.

A win-win for both giants
The deal, announced earlier today, is being lauded as a significant victory for both companies. RTVE gains a valuable new distribution channel for its original content, extending its reach to Disney+'s substantial subscriber base and bolstering its efforts to monetize programming investments. For Disney+, the infusion of high-quality Spanish content enhances its appeal to local audiences and strengthens its position in the European market.
Initial offerings will include seasons 11 and 14 of the hugely popular talent show MasterChef and MasterChef Celebrity, available shortly after their broadcast on La1. Furthermore, the drama series Rojo sobre Blanco, which premieres on RTVE before its arrival on Disney+, highlights the collaborative nature of the agreement. While the full extent of the content swap remains under wraps, industry insiders anticipate further announcements in the coming weeks.
But there's a bigger picture here. Disney+ isn't operating in a vacuum. The platform has been actively forging partnerships with free-to-air broadcasters across Europe – previously securing deals with Atresmedia in Spain, ARD and ZDF in Germany, and SIC in Portugal – all in an effort to aggregate a broader range of content and cater to diverse tastes. As Karl Homes, General Manager of Disney+ EMEA, stated, “The inclusion of these programs in Disney+ strengthens our ambition to enrich the service.”
RTVE’s move underscores its commitment to becoming a key player in the evolving media ecosystem, leveraging its production capabilities and talent to attract viewers and secure revenue streams. The partnership with Disney+ isn't just about expanding distribution; it's about strategically positioning RTVE for long-term growth in a rapidly shifting media landscape.
The deal’s impact extends beyond simply adding new shows to a streaming library. It’s a signal of the evolving relationship between traditional broadcasters and streaming giants, one where collaboration and content sharing are becoming increasingly vital for survival and success.
