Disney's frozen ever after gets a stunning visual overhaul

Walt Disney World's beloved Frozen Ever After attraction has received a significant refresh, with the iconic Audio-Animatronic figures of Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff sporting remarkably lifelike new faces. The upgrades, first implemented at Hong Kong Disneyland, promise a more immersive and emotionally resonant experience for guests.

Imagineering refines frozen's enchanting world

The changes, spearheaded by Walt Disney Imagineering, focus on enhancing the realism of the figures, particularly through improved 3D-printed eyes with a subtle glaze that mimics the gleam of real eyes. This attention to detail elevates the characters' expressions, lending Anna, in particular, a new depth of emotion previously absent with the projected faces.

The update wasn't merely cosmetic. The attraction also benefits from brighter scenes achieved by switching to white light for the faces, alongside enhanced paint and refreshed black light effects. Imagineering also upgraded the show control processors and adjusted the figures’ wrists to match the Hong Kong models, a clever workaround that avoided costly reanimation.

The decision to upgrade Frozen Ever After, a consistently high-demand attraction that debuted in 2016, underscores Disney's commitment to continually refining its experiences. The team prioritized minimizing downtime, leveraging data and learnings from the attraction's counterparts in Hong Kong and Tokyo DisneySea. The result? A subtly transformed ride that feels both familiar and strikingly new.

“You get that glisten in their eyes now because it’s a 3D printed eye with glaze,” notes Ken Ricci, Executive Creative Development at Walt Disney Imagineering. “And if you look at Anna in the scene where she’s with Kristoff and Sven, she’s just got this emotion on her face that she never had before.”

Beyond the visual enhancements, the update represents a broader effort to blur the lines between animation and reality, a pursuit deeply rooted in Disney’s history of Audio-Animatronics. The subtle shifts, from the refined expressions to the brighter scenes, combine to deliver a more captivating and emotionally engaging journey. And for those in the know, the adorable puffins near the end remain a charming nod to the original Maelstrom attraction.

The new Frozen Ever After is now open, inviting guests to experience the enhanced magic firsthand. This isn't just an update; it's a testament to Imagineering’s dedication to continually perfecting the stories we cherish.
