Duchovny in the dark: x-files reboot remains a murky mystery for original star
David Duchovny is officially adrift in the choppy waters of the X-Files reboot, and frankly, he’s not even entirely sure what he’s adrift in. The actor who defined Mulder’s iconic skepticism has admitted to barely a whisper of information regarding Ryan Coogler’s ambitious undertaking – a project that’s been shrouded in secrecy since Bloomberg first linked the Black Panther director to the revival in 2023.
A ghost of a plan
“I haven’t,” Duchovny stated bluntly to The Hollywood Reporter, dismissing any notion of having read a pilot script. “I’ve spoken to Ryan, and I have a general sense of what it is, but I haven’t read the script.” The sentiment is strikingly unconcerned, a deliberate distance from a show that’s already generating considerable buzz – and considerable speculation.
Coogler’s involvement, coupled with Deadline’s synopsis of two ‘highly decorated’ but ‘vastly different’ FBI agents forming an unlikely bond investigating unexplained phenomena, has understandably fueled the frenzy. But Duchovny appears completely detached, questioning even the potential for Mulder’s return. “I don’t know what the world of his show is. I don’t know if my character exists in that show. It’s all hypothetical to me, so I can’t really address it.”
The original series, a cinematic experience for its time, reportedly generated 20 to 25 movie ideas per writers room – a level of sustained creativity that Duchovny hopes Coogler’s team can replicate. “I’m not going to insult something like The Pitt, because that’s great television. But The X-Files was a movie idea every week. So I hope Ryan doesn’t have to do 25 [episodes] and only has to do 10 or 12. And I hope he’s got great writers, because that’s really the key to making that show work.”
Despite the uncertainty, news has trickled in that Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel have already joined the cast, bolstering the team behind this audacious reboot. While Gillian Anderson’s interest in reprising her role as Dana Scully remains a tantalizing possibility, the future of Mulder himself – and the very nature of the new X-Files universe – remains frustratingly opaque. It’s a fascinating, and somewhat disconcerting, position for a legend to occupy: a ghost in his own story.
