Grogu gets real: hasbro unveils $600 animatronic star wars icon
Hasbro and Disney Consumer Products have just dropped a bombshell: an ultra-realistic, 1:1 scale animatronic of Grogu, dubbed ‘Ultimate Grogu,’ priced at a staggering $599.
A step beyond the screen
This isn’t your average collectible. Hasbro invited IGN to an exclusive preview, and the effect was immediate – it genuinely felt like the character had just stepped out of the Mandalorian and into your living room. Forget static displays; this is interactive, expressive, and unsettlingly lifelike.
The secret sauce: mandalorian inspiration
The team behind Ultimate Grogu drew heavily on the original puppets used in The Mandalorian, even visiting director Jon Favreau and the set to ensure meticulous accuracy. As Disney Consumer Products Director of Product Design, Chris Gollaher, explained, “It’s amazing because you know it’s a puppet, but then you see what they’re doing and the amazing artistry on display behind it, and it just becomes Grogu.”
Engineering a forceful performance
Creating this level of realism wasn’t simple. Hasbro’s engineers tackled a significant challenge – replicating the subtle variations in Grogu’s puppet appearance across different scenes. They ultimately developed a single animatronic boasting over 250 animations and sounds, utilizing 14 sensors and four motors. And, perhaps most impressively, a fully articulated cookie, responsive to the Force, that Grogu obsessively pursues.
Exclusive editions and limited availability
Pre-orders begin today, April 30th, at 10am PT/1pm ET across Hasbro Pulse, Amazon, and Fan Channel retailers. A ‘First Edition’ will be strictly limited to a select few, boasting exclusive packaging and a collector’s card. The more accessible ‘Standard Edition’ will follow in early 2027, shipping without the card. Both editions share the same price and capabilities, but the First Edition represents a significant investment.
