Malcolm revival lands on disney+ – but a key cast member remains missing

The return of Malcolm in the Middle is finally here, arriving on disney+ with a four-part event series promising a reunion of the beloved 90s sitcom’s core cast. Fans can once again witness the chaotic brilliance of Hal, Lois, and their kids – though one familiar face is conspicuously absent: Dewey.

The dewey dilemma: why the original star didn’t return

The initial buzz surrounding the revival centered on the prospect of seeing Erik Per Sullivan reprise his role as the mischievous younger brother. Trailers showcased Sullivan, who’s currently pursuing a master’s degree at Harvard, convincingly embodying the character. However, behind the scenes, a surprising story emerged. Jane Kaczmarek, portraying Lois, revealed in an interview with The Guardian that Dewey’s absence stemmed from his academic pursuits. ‘He’s studying Dickens and is incredibly, incredibly intelligent,’ Kaczmarek stated. ‘He was offered a veritable cornucopia of money to return, and simply said, ‘No, thank you.’’”

Bryan Cranston, playing Hal, added further insight via a Fly on the Wall podcast, recounting a personal phone call with Sullivan. ‘I spoke with Erik and said, ‘Hey, the show’s back. You’re coming back.’ He responded, ‘Oh, that’s fantastic.’ And I said, ‘Yes, so we’re really looking forward to you returning.’ He replied, ‘Oh, no, no, no. I don’t want to do it. But it’s fantastic,’’ Cranston explained. Linwood Boomer, the series’ creator, reportedly attempted to secure Sullivan’s return through a Zoom call, but to no avail. The result? A significant, albeit understandable, loss for devoted fans.

A familiar cast returns

Fortunately, the revival boasts a full cast of original players, including Frankie Muniz (Malcolm), Justin Berfield (Reese), Christopher Masterson (Francis), Emy Coligado (Pima), Craig Lamar Traylor (Stevie) and Gary Anthony Williams (Abe). The dynamic ensemble is ready to recapture the show’s signature brand of absurd humor. Notably, the series is set to premiere this week.

Despite the absence of Dewey, the Malcolm in the Middle revival promises a nostalgic trip for longtime viewers and a fresh introduction for a new generation. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of a show that once dominated the cultural landscape.
