Marvel rivals expands roster to 48 heroes, but original characters remain unlikely

NetEase Games is rapidly expanding its hero roster for Marvel Rivals, pulling from decades of comic book lore to reach a staggering 48 playable characters. However, the company has signaled a firm commitment to sticking with established Marvel properties, suggesting players shouldn't expect original creations anytime soon.

At GDC, creative director Guangyun “GuangGuang” Chen and executive producer Danny Koo addressed the game’s ongoing live-service strategy, confirming a steady stream of new heroes – two per two-month season. While the prospect of a MCU collaboration is appealing to many, executives emphasized the focus remains squarely within the existing Marvel universe.

“We have so many characters in Marvel, [we’re] not looking at outside of Marvel,” Koo stated, dismissing speculation about crossovers with properties outside the core Marvel canon. The team is already managing a substantial roster, with characters like Deadpool, Gambit, and the Fantastic Four having been added post-launch.

The expansion isn’t just about quantity. A key concern is the user interface, particularly the challenge of presenting such a diverse cast of characters in a way that’s both accessible and engaging. “It’s like, ‘Who’s your favorite heroes that you want to play, so you can have them at any time at your disposal?’” Koo explained. The team is actively working on how players will navigate this growing roster.

The latest addition, White Fox, launched with Season 7, followed by Black Cat in Season 7.5. The identities of heroes 50 and 51 remain under wraps, with Season 8 slated for release in the coming months.

Beyond character additions, NetEase is also focused on refining gameplay mechanics. The goal is to introduce heroes with unique abilities that shake up match dynamics, avoiding repetitive archetypes. The team is actively experimenting with different playstyles to ensure each hero feels distinct.

The Marvel Rivals team is currently preparing for its first major collaboration with the MCU, the Path to Doomsday event, which will run throughout 2024, culminating with the release of Avengers: Doomsday on December 18. NetEase emphasizes that the game’s development roadmap is tightly aligned with the wider Marvel narrative.

The game’s continued growth is impressive. With consistently delivered content and a focus on balancing the roster, Marvel Rivals is positioning itself as a significant player in the hero shooter genre. The sheer volume of Marvel characters provides ample material for future expansions, although the company remains firmly committed to the established universe.

The UI optimization will be key. Players will need intuitive tools to manage their growing roster of heroes effectively. The question isn’t whether the roster will continue to expand, but how NetEase will manage the influx while maintaining a compelling and balanced gameplay experience.

NetEase's strategy signals a calculated approach to building a sustainable live-service game. They're prioritizing depth and diversity within the existing Marvel mythology, a strategy that, for now, seems to be working.
