Netflix revives 'man on fire' with star-studded reboot
Netflix is set
to resurrect the 2004 film Man on Fire with a new series launching April 30, 2026, exclusively revealed to IGN. The series, a reimagining of A.J. Quinnell's novel, stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as John Creasy, a former Special Forces operative tasked with protecting a young girl from dangerous forces.New series retakes iconic role
The eight-episode series, filmed in Brazil and Mexico City, offers a fresh take on the story that previously starred Denzel Washington. Abdul-Mateen II, who also serves as an Executive Producer, described his character as someone grappling with PTSD and trauma, a far cry from the stoic portrayal of Creasy in the 2004 film.
“Throughout the series, (Creasy’s) never fully formed into an action hero. He is, at all times, the guy from Episode 1 who is struggling,” Abdul-Mateen II told IGN. This vulnerability, he explained, is central to the series’ exploration of the character.
Showrunner Kyle Killen, known for his work on Halo, admitted to being a long-time admirer of the 2004 film. “This is an entirely new and exciting property in its own right,” Killen stated. The series also alters the age of the protected child, with Billie Boullet portraying Poe Rayburn, now a teenager, allowing for a deeper and more nuanced dynamic with Creasy.
A different kind of protector
The relationship between Creasy and his charge remains the heart of the story, but the updated dynamic allows for a more complex exploration of both characters. “She can see through him,” Abdul-Mateen II said. “She’s dealing with the truth of the situation right in front of her eyes, so she’s watching him. He is not as impenetrable.”
The series aims to honor the legacy of its predecessors while forging its own path. Killen emphasized that the goal was to create a story that resonates with fans of the original films while offering a new perspective on the iconic character of Creasy. The upcoming teaser trailer is slated to drop later today.
The shift to a teenage protectee allows for a more dynamic and challenging relationship, forcing Creasy to confront his own demons while navigating the complexities of protecting a young woman on the cusp of adulthood.
This isn't just a remake; it's a reinterpretation. Netflix’s Man on Fire promises a compelling evolution of a beloved story.
The series will arrive on Netflix on April 30, 2026.
