Overwatch unleashes sierra and a map rewrite – season 2 drops a host of changes

Overwatch is betting big on a resurgence, ditching the ‘2’ and pivoting with Season 2, and the initial update is already packing a serious punch. Talon’s reign continues, but this time, it’s bolstered by a new hero, a revamped map, and a welcome return to post-match accolades – all designed to reignite player engagement.

Meet sierra: a reluctant hero with a dark past

The spotlight shines on Sierra Sierra, a new DPS joining the Overwatch roster. Formerly the Head of Security at Watchpoint: Grand Mesa, she’s a hardened operative with a murky history and a burning need to uncover the truth behind her mother’s involvement with the Soldier Enhancement Program – a connection that inevitably leads her to Jack Morrison (Soldier 76). Equipped with a combat drone, Dorothy, and a devastating rifle, Sierra promises a fresh, tactical playstyle.

Let’s break down her arsenal: The Helix Rifle – an automatic assault weapon featuring a spiraling projectile pattern, increasing accuracy with sustained fire. Tracking Shot – an ability to temporarily lock onto an enemy, ensuring the Helix Rifle’s shots remain on target. Anchor Drone – a deployable drone that Sierra can latch onto, allowing for tactical repositioning. Tremor Charge – a grenade that unleashes a concussive shockwave upon impact. Finally, Trailblazer, her ultimate ability, deploys a drone that rains down explosive payloads on unsuspecting foes. She’s a recon specialist, revealing enemies with damage at half health – a crucial advantage in the heat of battle. Choosing between Full Flight (enhancing drone maneuverability) or Tight Grip (boosting rifle velocity) further refines her strategic options.

Grand mesa gets a glow-up – and a story expansion

Control map, Grand Mesa, has undergone a significant overhaul, emerging from its hiatus with a revised design focused on cleaner engagements and more fluid team maneuvers. Three new arenas – Icebreaker, Research Station, and Underground – each offer distinct tactical challenges, promising a fresh feel for veteran players and a compelling introduction for newcomers. Expect tighter flanks, strategic choke points, and clearer sightlines throughout the arctic landscape.

Beyond the visual changes, Season 2 introduces a new Event: Operation: Grand Mesa. Players can complete challenges to earn Voice Lines, an Icon, a Name Card, a rare Title, a Spray, Battle Pass Tier Skips, and Loot Boxes. The event runs from April 14th to May 4th, intertwining the story of Talon’s reign with the secrets of Grand Mesa and Sierra’s personal quest.

Back to basics: post-match accolades return

A beloved feature long absent from Overwatch 2, post-match accolades are finally making a triumphant return. Players can now officially recognize their teammates and even their opponents with a well-deserved MVP vote. No more glory-grabbing multikillers stealing the spotlight – this system prioritizes teamwork and strategic contributions. Verbal congratulations via the lobby voice chat are, predictably, not guaranteed to be peaceful.

Minor perks and mythic skins add layers of customization

Season 2 brings a refresh to hero perks, with Ramattra gaining Prolonged Barrier, Pharah receiving a new explosive ability, Reaper getting Trigger Finger, and Soldier: 76 benefiting from Agility Training. Furthermore, a host of new Mythic Skins are arriving, including a Volted Overdrive skin for Soldier 76 and a Sumi-Ichimonji weapon skin for Genji, leaning further into the ninja’s dragon aesthetic. Rounding out the cosmetic additions are a Sakura collection featuring cherry blossom-themed looks and a collaboration with LE SSERAFIM. And, rumour has it, a Mephisto-coded Rammatra skin from Diablo is on the horizon.

Finally, Stadium mode gets a welcome upgrade with the introduction of Ramattra, a rework for Juno, and the midseason arrival of Jetpack Cat. The map Lijiang Night Market is also being added, and the competitive decay system will be replaced with a smoother transition. With these updates, Overwatch is clearly striving to recapture its momentum and deliver a compelling experience for its dedicated player base.
