PlayStation 5 Sales Slow as Sony Shifts Focus to Recurring Revenue

Sony's PlayStation 5 console has seen a significant slowdown in sales, with the company no longer aggressively marketing the device. This change in strategy comes as the console enters the latter stages of its life cycle, nearly six years after its initial release in November 2020.

According to Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki, the company does not need to "aggressively sell" the PS5 anymore, instead focusing on generating recurring revenue from its existing user base. The PlayStation Plus subscription service, which has over 125 million monthly active users, is a key area of focus for the company's monetization efforts.

This shift in approach comes as the PS5 faces stock shortages once again, following the highly anticipated reveal of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) on Netflix. The console's sales hit an all-time low in May after Sony announced price hikes across all PS5 models in April 2026.

Some fans have expressed disappointment with Sony's plans to discontinue physical game discs starting in January 2028, with many taking to social media to protest the move. However, the company remains committed to its digital-first strategy, with CFO Lin Tao citing the increasing "digitization of contents" as the reason for this decision.

In response to a class-action lawsuit over the lack of clear ownership rights for digital game purchases, Sony maintains that it is "not plausible" for consumers to believe they are obtaining permanent ownership in the digital age. As the company looks to the future, it seems likely that the PS6, if released, will also forego physical media in favor of a fully digital experience.
